Mortal Kombat Apprehension

I’ve been playing a lot of the Mortal Kombat demo to see if I like it.  It’s really good, but I do have some concerns.   The biggest apprehension I have are the x-ray moves.   At first, they were awesome, but as time progressed and I grew to be a better player they became easier to pull off.  This in and of itself is not bad, but they become horrifically repetitive far too quickly.   It’s the same cinema every time.  I know what will happen every time.

I understand the purpose of super moves, and I love them in other games like Super Street Fighter 4, but damn, the x-ray moves have me questioning this purchase.   Maybe it’s the graphic style, but I almost dread doing them. Do any of you feel the same way?

I was hoping as we got closer to the release that characters would have a choice of Xrays like in Street Fighter.  Being able to choose a more defensive Xray (like johnny Cages) or a more offensive (Scorpion) would be a cool wrinkle to the whole Xray dynamic...

I agree with what others have said, that being that in the full game you're going to be seeing less of the same x-rays simply because you'll be encountering way more characters.

Secondly, you don't have to use them. You can use you special meter for breakers and enhanced special attacks as part of your strategy. The whole x-ray thing is really a high risk, high reward thing anyway.

Agreed. Also, not every character will be able to pull of an X-ray the same way. Example: Johnny Cage's X-ray is used during a counter attack while Subzero's is used at close range. Plus when you are playing against a friend it's always nice to be able to pull one of them off.  I've been playing with my cousin a lot and trust me, it doesn't always work.

@l4wd0g:   If I only experienced close, tense matches 1 out of 1000 times, I wouldn't buy the game either.

The demo only has four characters. So I agree with what your saying that the X-Rays and the fatalities becoming very repetitive. Just like Techhits said though when the full game releases there will be 26 characters each with there own X-Rays and multiple fatalities as well as new stage fatalities. Plus when you're in a tough match and pull one of those off for a comeback or for the win you will be reveling in that animation. Plus I wouldn't rule out new X-Ray attacks or stage fatalities through updates or DLC.

I understand your apprehension, but I think it will not be an issue in the full game. Though if anything I see a lot of people using Scorpion/Sub-Zero in the game just like Ryu/Ken in Street Fighter. Which can be tiresome.

I like this.  It'll probably be more exciting when you use x-ray/fatalities on a real person to humiliate them and what not ...i guess if youre competitive lol :)

Honestly, x-rays are easy to dodge if you know what that characters x-ray looks like. For example, on johnny cages x-ray you must smack him for his to start, if you see it coming, you can jump back and his x-ray is null. Im pretty sure everyone's is gonna be like that. Its just watching out for it. Putting block up at the right time and all that biz.
