I would download the first and most recent one and tell him to give it 3 of each before he makes his mind up. Personally if you are going to be a fan of the Bombcast you have to experience the Jeff, Vinny and Ryan days, because some of that stuff is beautiful.

Listening to the show from the start will help make that bond with the personalities which is what great radio is about, it will also give them an idea, and some context about what this site and the bombcast stood for if that doesn't sound too grandiose...

Basically if you are going to be a fan of the Bombcast you have to meet Ryan, even if it might break your heart a little in the end...

Aside from the Bombcast

Comedy Bang Bang - Improv comedy...when its good hilarious, but as with all improv can be hit and miss

Beastcast (not every week)

More Or Less - Radio 4 Satistics show (more interesting than it sounds, basically looks at the use of stats in politics/media and generally shows how mistaken/misused they are

This American Life and Serial

The Savage Lovecast - Wonderful sex and relationship podcast, really eye-opening, honest, radical and sometimes moving

Kermode and Mayos Film Review - BBC Radio film show

8-4 Play (not every week)

Filmspotting - Slightly more cineaste podcast than KMFR

Richard Herrings Leicester Square Podcast

The Moth Hour - Great true short stories

....probably some more I have forgotten/only listen to very occasionally

@homelessbird I think we probably agree for the most part. I haven't ever played any of this company's game, but the general opinion seems to be that they were not very successful in engaging with the audience, but this is a seperate issue and is a distraction to the wider discussion.

I think if you look at the way most other publicly funded art is marketed and sold, it will generally be in a simillar way to other products which go straight to marketplace. Films with tax breaks or grants get released in the cinema, music gets sold. I don't think there is any problem for a publicly funded game to release on Steam and charge a price similar to other games. The problem here seems to be that these games were just not very good (again I have to stress I have not played them).

Governement grants and other funding resources are obviously one solution to that, but honestly, I think that outfits that want to be like Tale of Tales need a different business model. If you're interested in fine art, you can pay $10 for a museum ticket and experience hundreds of artworks, some by the greatest artists of all time. I don't know how that translates into the gaming world, but even to someone interested in this sort of experience, I think that asking for that much for one experience - that despite being something you "own," is often not worth repeating - just feels viscerally like a bad deal.

Museums all round the world get huge amounts of government money. Most of them wouldn't be viable propositions without funding and donations.

So much of the arts, film, music etc get government funding. The point is that some people believe that art should be helped to find a seperation from commerce. Otherwise you only get what sells, not what is beautiful.

There is also the question that in today's worlds where rents are incredibly high (I live in London) and living costs are rising, the only people able to take on a risk career in the arts are those with backing from their parents or a trust fund, so we only get art made by certain groups in society, shutting others out. Government funding in this respect opens the arts for all.

I don't know whether this company made good games or worthwhile art, but I do believe there is a role for government it helping artists really express themselves and not just worry about making money.

p.s. Great article @austin_walker really enjoying reading your stuff..

That was absolutely fantastic mate, one of the best written and most clearly argued pieces I have read on Giant Bomb. I thought you struck exactly the right tone in presenting why criticism is so important, and furthermore how this criticism should be presented and accepted.

I used to enjoy reading Patrick's stuff, but it always felt like the work of someone who was coming to grips with issues and how to present them to readers as he wrote. You writing seems fully formed and I am really looking forward to enjoying more of it over the coming months and years.

Hows about everyone just calms the hell down until Bethesda confirms the details? Seems like a really bold claim, considering they've given you the option to chose a female character in previous installments of the series, I don't see them veering away from that option unless it is for completely story-based reasons.

Reddit is about as credible as a 10 year old kid in the 90s on the school yard, talking about all that cool shit he claimed to find in Mortal Kombat for the Genesis.

Rumor and speculation rumor and speculation.

Yeah it seems like that Reddit post just scored some lucky hits. Still not entirely sure what Vinny was refering to, maybe it was the male only choice, because that would be rubbish if true. But luckily it seems not, hopefully we will find out for certain in a week.

However I am quite interested in the fact that your character may speak. It this means they can tell a more focused and better story that could be excellent, although New Vegas didn't seem to have a problem.

Hugely excited for the game, I just hope her made up release date is correct, I am well prepared for 2016 though. However I don't think they would be releasing such an extensive trailer and then having gameplay at the show if the game is still over a year away.

I have yet to listen to this beastcast episode, but if he's referring to the reddit leak from 11 months ago, he could be referencing the fact that you can't select to play a female character until after the game is complete. Though I'm sure that whole reddit leak was proven false recently.

I hope thats not true, I always make a lady character in rpgs. Also it doesn't really make much sense to just save it for NG+....

On the most recent Beastcast (which I haven't listened to all of yet) Vinny said there was something in the Fallout4 leak which if true will mean a big back lash against Bethesda - what is this?

Is it the

silent protagonist

stuff? If not does anyone know?

2010.....goddamn I miss you Ryan. Him and Jeff just had one of those partnerships which just worked so well. It was just beautiful to hear those two talking shit, some of the very early podcasts are my favourite for that reason. Anytime I heard Ryan's high pitched girlish giggling I would just beam - wherever I was.

I just feel that with Vinny gone there is no-one who can properly work with Jeff when he is at his most creative and funny. Also Dan really rubs me the wrong way a great deal of the time. Occasionally I can listen to him but his schtick just aggrivates me most of the time which is a shame...still a quality show though. Feels like coming home every Wed.
