Fact: More or less every significant part of Avatar's story is taken from Pocahontas, which was released in 1995.
Pocahontas was positively received, but was not praised as a "masterpiece", and did not win any significant awards. From this, we can deduce that if Avatar didn't have shiny graphics, nobody would call it a "masterpiece", much less "best movie ever".
If we go on from there, we can deduce that the only aspects of Avatar that actually deserve to be called "masterpieces", are the computer graphics and the motion capture. Boom. "
