I've updated the Xonar D2 drivers and disabled any of the enhancements the card offers, alas to no avail.

I noticed this within the first minutes of the game, I thought it was just badly implemented at first - but then during the prologue when you find yourself in a tent and the echo is still there.... Gah. If your tent echoes there's definitely something wrong!

The sound on the game is really badly done - If you have a 7.1 sound system you don't get ANY audio at all - instead you have to configure the system as 5.1 within windows first.  To date I've not found a fix for the annoying echo, I'd welcome any ideas though.

PS: I'm using a Xonar D2 sound card, fully updated drivers.
