Favourite 2012 Games

A list of my favourites games (of those I played) in 2012.

List items

  • Despite the large amount of negative press and issues that have plagued Diablo 3, it remains the game of 2012 that my friends and I played the longest and had the most fun with.

  • A beautiful, casual-friendly take on the traditional MMO. I love that I can return here any time with no commitment and have just as much fun with a minimal amount of re-learning the ropes.

  • I admit I still haven't finished off the story in this because I've been too busy running around the island hunting animals with RPGs, searching through lost temples for relics and wiping out pirate strongholds.

  • Despite being a fairly average shooter, spec ops surprised me with how much I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed it so much I literally played through the (admittedly short) game twice in one weekend.

  • The final chapter in an amazing trilogy. It wasn't as strong as ME2 but I still had a great time finishing my Commander Shepard's story, as well as spending a lot of time in the multiplayer everyone expected to be complete shit.

  • A really well designed, more accessible take on a strategy classic. It was always hard losing your favourite characters to bad decision or an unlucky dice roll. Though some serious bugs ended up leaving a bit of a bad taste in my mouth as I tried playing through it on higher difficulties.

  • Not only was dishonored one of the best stealth games in recent memory (every stealth game needs a blink mechanic), it also had one of the most absorbing worlds I've seen, and an art style I never got tired of looking at.

  • This one is up there with Super Meat Boy as one of my favourite technical platformers. Moments of hair-ripping frustration are followed by complete elation at the success of a perfect run.

  • Journey's take on multiplayer was really what made it so special. Surfing through the desert, hiding from monsters and pushing through the mountain's trials with a friend you didn't know and couldn't communicate with was incredibly memorable.

  • The Walking Dead is the first adventure game I've really enjoyed and does a great job putting you in situations where you just don't know what the right answer is. Despite being fairly sparse on gameplay, the story is what pulls you through the game as you try to do your best to help Clementine and your friends.
