Less serious, please...

First, AMC is showing Back to the Future in theaters this Saturday and I can't freaking wait (I'm going)!!!

This brings me to another point: I miss sci-fi movies that don't take themselves too seriously. Hot Tub Time Machine messed around with this, but for the most part sci-fi has become uber-serious (outside of SyFy, that is... but that's an entirely different beast).

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't dislike that when it's done well. Some of my favorite films are actually like this (Inception, for one) and I generally do prefer darker themes in my entertainment. I think I just miss the 80's and early 90's at times. Films were often simpler, but still had enough complexity to satisfy me.

Maybe it's just my inner kid crying out for more films that feel like BTTF and Karate Kid. After all, nostalgia can be a powerful motivator for me. In the end, though, I will still hold on to hope that in the future, sci-fi can still have a lighter tone every now and then.
