My Top Ten Games of 2017

It's that time again and hey, I know it's been said to death at this point, but wow! It's been a great year for gaming. I say "for gaming" for numerous obvious reasons... whatever, let's just say that I felt more eager to bury myself in the latest games this year than any other and leave it at that, OK?

It's also been refreshing to see Nintendo come back from their lackluster slump with the Wii-U (still don't own one, oh well!). I've had one of those new-fangled Switches for quite a while now and I can already say that it is a very cool system. Bravo, Mr. Nintendo.

Here's some awards to games that don't really qualify for this list:

Late to the Party Awards:

Mass Effect 3 - Hey, wow, I finally beat it! I closed out the trilogy for my FemShep and had a great time doing it. Yeah, the endings were kind of... bullshit... but I still enjoyed them - If that makes any sense! Maybe I'll check out Andromeda at some point.

The Witcher 3 + Heart of Stone - Phew. I finally wrapped up the main story in Witcher 3, plus I completed Heart of Stone. Not for lack of trying... it only took 2 years and 170 hours! What an incredible achievement. Time to dive into Blood and Wine.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Although it has some issues here and there, this was a very overlooked game from 2016. Happy to beat it, but shame that it ended on a cliffhanger. Bring me that sequel, Mr. Jensen!

List items

  • I grew up loving games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, so the ORIGINAL Original Sin would've been a no-brainer for me, right? Wrong, I didn't really care for the first Original Sin. While I appreciated what it was going for, it felt lacking when it came to compelling party members and interesting decisions. Then comes Original Sin 2, a game that I was really hesitant to try out. I finally caved and played through it over a couple of months with a good friend... and it was great! One of the best co-op games in recent memory. "I'M READY."

  • Mario Odyssey is honestly that rare game this year that I have pretty much zero problems with. I smiled all the way through it and I didn't want it to end by the time the credits rolled. A fantastic modern successor to Mario 64.

  • Breath of the Wild is kind of mystifying for the first ten to twenty hours. Everything seems possible and it is so cool to discover all the weird ways that you can interact with it's world. In terms of sheer open-world fun, this game is certainly up there. That being said, I wasn't crazy about the constant thunderstorms (resulting in me basically waiting for them to pass during certain situations), some of the dungeons and the weapon durability system - so those personal nitpicks weigh it down for me and hold it back from making it into the Top 2. It's still an awesome game that is impressive to play and behold. Good job, Nintendo.

  • Damn, this game is something special. It improves the combat from the first game and expands it's original ideas into something that reminds me of the best parts of Dungeons and Dragons. It's the kind of game that inspires me in various creative ways with it's interesting situations and fantasy settings. The companion system is a welcome addition to the formula. Sure, some parts of the game are RNG bullshit, but I didn't mind it too much. A great game to sit down to play at night with a glass of ginger root beer and just let it's atmosphere wash over you. Buy it!

  • Prey is a gripping Sci-Fi experience that reminds me why I love stuff like System Shock and Bioshock. If you love those style of games, I think Prey is worth a serious look. It's not for everybody, but for me, Prey was one of the few games that I had no problem beating this year.

  • Persona games are something special and Persona 5 is no different. I played a lot of this game and loved it, but I need to play more in 2018. Like Persona 4, the soundtrack is really good and an easy addition to my YouTube playlist.

  • Yakuza 0 will leave a great first impression on you. The opening hours of this game are eye-catching and ridiculous. The side-missions are actually done well and several of them had me chuckling hard from the great translation/writing. I dig this game a lot and look forward to playing more of it in 2018. THAT'S RAD.

  • PUBG has some issues (server problems, hackers, moments that feel like total BS), but hey, I still had a lot of fun playing it with various friends this year.

  • I want to love Horizon... everyone else seems to! But I just kind of like it. Don't get me wrong, the world/story are cool, but it's the general moment-to-moment gameplay that feels... lacking. When I take down a huge monster, it's satisfying, but on the other hand... endlessly collecting resources and sifting through my inventory is less than fun. The foundation is certainly there for a great game (or sequel) and I enjoy Aloy's story, but I feel like Horizon could've been even better than what it ended up being.

  • I was so excited for Shadow of Wardor. The first game was a standout experience for me in 2014 and I very much looked forward to returning to it's sequel's improved Nemesis system and open-world madness. Unfortunately, in Shadow of War's case, more felt like less. Yeah, they added a somewhat competent loot system and yeah, they added the fortresses - but in the end, it didn't feel like it actually improved on the original game's formula. In Shadow of War's defense, there are some cool moments to be had with it's expanded Nemesis system and the story felt somewhat promising in the beginning. I didn't care for the Nazghuls that you fight in the later story missions and the game ultimately felt like a lackluster grind to the finish (supposedly followed by more grind in the post-ending Shadow Wars). It was fun to play for about 20 hours, but the overall quality of the package is questionable (NOT even talking about the loot boxes, too! That was a non-issue for this game).
