Sony’s Hirai Says PlayStation 3 Is Only Halfway Through 10-Year Life Cycle

Sony Corp. (SNE)’s Kazuo Hirai said the PlayStation 3 console will have a 10-year lifespan, suggesting the 5-year-old video-game player won’t be replaced soon.

Networks can’t deliver the full amount of data contained on game disks, Hirai, Sony’s executive deputy president, said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“It’s very important that we continue to have a dedicated home-based console,” Hirai said. “Relying solely on networks to deliver content is unfortunately just not possible. It’s still very difficult to have consumers download 50 gigabytes of data or more.”

The PlayStation 3 was introduced in November 2006. Some press reports suggested a new version would be unveiled at this year’s E3 video-game conference.

Hirai also told CNBC that turning around Sony’s money- losing TV manufacturing operation is crucial to company profitability. In December, Tokyo-based Sony sold its stake in a liquid-crystal-display venture with Samsung Electronics Co.

Sony is considering developing exclusive shows for its devices, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer said today in a separate interview.

“It’s coming,” Stringer said. “It’s natural.”

U.S. traded Sony shares gained 1.3 percent to $17.70 at the close. The stock fell 49 percent last year.

sony really? and no ps4 at e3 2012 ? you can't be serious this means if they want ps3 for 5 yrs they wont put a ps4 for about 3 yrs , ,

and this will put sony way behind nintendo and we all know nintendo how it takes advantage of a head start ms is already looking to also not show xbox 3 at e3 2012 because well --kenict is one thing their focusing on ,,

and the sales of the 360 still up there

so this means wii u will be the sole competitor in the 8th gen for a while! you may as well also say theyve won if the competitors really do not get their stuff out the door in 2014 at least!

but see the xbox original did not last 10 years . and microsoft has never said it was! so i d like you to prove that the original xbox lasted 10 yrs on the market because from my recollection it died in 2005- 4 yrs after it was released!

ps is totally different sony had ps2 for how long on the market-it just finally died so there is more reason to believe they dont need a ps4 but thats the thing , whether or not they can get vita to get off its feet and ps3 continues to sell after wii u is out , because thats when the true test is going to be taken ,

wii has already outsold the competition , and if sony lets this go for 2 yrs without a single announcment they could very well be in serious jeopardy there in the worst positions of the 3 - financially speaking ,

so your argument that the xbox original lasted ten years is already debunked by the fact microsoft never claimed such things about the xbox, the xbox 360 how ever, kenict revived it , so there you go ,

they aint in the same boat as sony , their console sold well enough and got profit from xbox live etc,

where as sony lost money four years streight i dont even know if they broke even in 2011 yet, from all those lost, thanks to vita they had to have shelled some more money out , erasing anything they may have gotten

Just going to point out that Sony didn't consider the release of the PS3 as being the end of the PS2's life cycle.

This. That thing is still around.

Yeh, they are just trying to avoid pulling a SEGA, when they said the Saturn "isn't the future" or whatever they pretty much killed it in one sentence. Does not mean a new console isn't coming.

Also, lol @ thinking than nintondo can take advantage of anything at this point.

They're going to release a new console. It's like Microsoft saying that the original XBOX is still a good deal, 10 years later. It's not. It looks shit, and so will the PS3 in another few years. Seriously, a tree on current systems is made up of like 6 flat polygons, and the ground is just a flat texture with vertical flat 'grass' textures sticking out of it.

For the billionth time, a ten year cycle does not mean a new console will not come out until 2016.

I know this has been already said, but the Playstation 2 is still alive and kicking, and its been how many years? Eleven or twelve I think.

All they are saying is that they think the system will still be having games released and have new content 5 years from now even if the next console is released, which makes perfect sense. Now, will it have as long a life as the PS2?

This is a marketing thing - a 10 year lifespan usually means that the console will continue to sell games for at least 10 years; it doesn't mean that another console can't launch within that 10 years.

it's been an interesting generation. huge amounts of work on infrastructure behind the scenes and development on making consoles full media experiences.

monthly sales of both are still really high. why bother jumping to the next generation already?

nintendo holds a totally different market segment so whatever about them

i don't think we'll see anything about new consoles until E3 2013, even then it's not particularly likely.

even then, it'll be a year or two until the thing debuts

so 3 years sounds about right

the longer we wait, the better the next console will be! right? right!?

I am resisting the urge to be really sarcastic about your grammar because I know that I'm pretty bad about it myself. Anyway I'm not buying another console, no one I know wants to buy another console. Sony made the right call.
