Downloadable games better than retail games lately?

Just wondering if other people feel like the downloadable games have been better than the retail games lately? Lara Craft and the Guardian of Light, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Shank, Risk: Factions, Joe Danger and Limbo are just afew of the really good downloadable games. I've liked them all, demo or full game.

What do you guys thinks?

Add Monday Night Combat to that list and you got a deal, brother. I couldn't agree more.

Monday Night Combat is the only downloadable game that I've been playing lately.

Shank looks nice, but it's as repetitive as hell, same with Scott Pilgrim (which i actually prefer) Haven't played the rest apart from Joe Danger, which is fun for a while.
So no. I don't agree. Also it's the summer draught. Not like there's tons of games coming out until Sept.

Hopefully all games will be downloadable soon. I hate having to stick a disc into a drive, if you know what I mean.

Only because there are hardly any games that came out this month. Besides Limbo and Shank I haven't really been interested in many downloadable games recently.

I would agree but were in the summer which is the dry spell for full retail games, But i think this works out because smaller game companies can clean up in the summer and really bring out some great games that  the bigger companies are too scared to make.

Nope.

Can't compare them to proper console/handheld releases that happened in 2010.

None of them are as impressive. Just pretty good for the most part.

I wouldn't say better or worse, but there definitely are a ton of damn good arcade games out.

Yeah I'm enjoying a lot of Monday Night Combat and I've recently bought Shank. Thinking about buying Scott Pilgrim as well. Love beat em ups!

@Berezov: Yeah, that true too. Some of the recent downloadable games have been kinda old school; Beat em ups or platformers. That coule also account for some of the good reviews and good response they have gotten.

I've been enoying the downloadable titles lately, especially Limbo and a smattering of Indie Games from xbox live.   I have a bunch of retail games, still in shrink wrap, that I just can't bring myself to play.  There's something about the smaller scope of downloadable titles that appeal to me at this stage in my life (husband, dad, limited gaming time).  I like pick up and play, and the downloadables seem to best suit that type of playing style.

I think they've been becoming better than they were in the past, but better than retail games?

I say nay. It's just because so little good retail games come out in the summer and the heat is getting to your head.

Oh yeah, I'm very impressed with the growing quality of downloadable games, even after the conclusion of SoA.  Granted, retail games are not plentiful this time of year, but the number of retail games doesn't affect the quality of downloadable games.

My list would be someone different but yeah, I too have been spending a large chunk of my gaming time playing downloadable games as of late.

I don't know if I'd say better or worse but they certainly are pulling their weight these days.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I think that arcade games can provide small little snippets of awesomeness, but you need a retail budget to actually flesh out ideas. That being said, lots of games from small developers like Limbo have much more leeway to flesh out their ideas how they want them.

The summer always sucks for games (ironic and shitty for school kids such as me) and arcade games have been an incredible highlight this summer with almost all of the games in the summer of arcade.

We're in the Summer time; there's a drought as far as normal games, but a surplus of downloads. This will change soon, though.

Yep. I think it's more a result of the time of year.

I dunno. Yes and no. Depends on you genre. For shooters, no way. For adventure games =/=. But for certain games, certainly.

The question is more: are downloadable games catching up to retail?

I'll second this. After playing some of the games like Limbo and Trials HD, which are simple, fun and addictive, I agree totally that some retail games just don't got it any more...

This generation on 360 I feel that a good half of the best games are on XBLA.  Less so on other platforms, except PC where everything is technically downloadable.

I worry about ownership, but I believe the new business model opportunities has opened a lot of windows and allowed for a lot of games we wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I think it is just a question of perception and expectations. A typical down-loadable game on XBLA costs 10, 15 bucks. That is not that much. So we don't expect a lot from it. So when a Braid or Monday Night Combat comes out, we are blown away. But when we go to the store and pay 60 dollar for a retail game we expect much more. We want Crysis 2 graphics, with Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer and StarCraft 2 support added to a Mass Effect story.

DLC lately has been better than retail games. Dragon Age is still in my drive from last year.

It's summer all the kids are off and some parents have time off. If someone released a blockbuster game now they would clean up majorly.

Reach > Shank. I disagree with your notion GOOD SIR.

Then again, I haven't actually bought a ton of downloadables lately as I've been low on cash. Maybe now that my paycheck rolled in I'll finally pick up MNC and Shadow Complex?

Right now its summer time, what better time for downloadable times to come out and shine. Not to mention it is a lot easier paying 15 instead of 60, and having  the instant access to the game rather than going to the store and picking it up.

There are some great downloadable games that have come out recently but on the whole I still don't think they match up to full-length retail games.
