This is a combination of games I haven't played in years, but often think back to, and games that I am still playing to this day.

  • Many consider Demon's Souls to be the better of the two, but I find the interconnected world here more immersive than "Demon's". Plus some of the NPC journeys are truly heartbreaking. I may be biased as I played "Dark Souls" first, so perhaps some of it wouldn't have been as fresh had I played "Demon's" first. Either way these first two games in the "Souls" series have gotten me more excited about gaming than any other game I've ever played and stuck with me long after putting the controller down. I also find that these two games are, for me anyway, the best representation of the gaming medium. The story is there if you want it, but it is incorporated through exploration and interaction rather than just watching a cut scene. The games throw you right into the world and leave it to you to figure things out and work your way through. I also love that death is not a punishment, but rather another part of the tool box in terms of progressing through the game. And seeing shadows of other players and throughout and occasionally fighting alongside them are great reminders that you are not alone in the struggle.

  • It's not just about the difficulty, but this game's unique approach to narrative, level design, unique multiplayer component and NPCs who actually seem to have their own arcs and goals really make this one such a refreshing experience.

  • Fantastic atmosphere and art design. I also love the fact that you actually feel bad for taking down some of these Colossi. Really strong emotional core.

  • Amazing game world and choices that matter. Fallout 3 and New Vegas were enjoyable as well, but this is the one that really captured me.

  • Aside from a lack of interesting narrative and ridiculously designed female characters, this is one of the most thrilling, punishing pure action games I've ever played.

  • I've since soured on the Metal Gear franchise, but I thought this one was excellent. Great level design/exploration as well as some incredibly memorable boss fights. I'm not sure how well the story would hold up on a repeat play-through now though.

  • My first hack 'n slash experience. Incredibly addictive.

  • Just pure fun, especially with a group. I don't know how many hours we spent just playing Crash Mode.

  • Like playing a Sergio Leone movie. Fantastic world to explore with some great story/character development toward the end.

  • I actually don't know if I would enjoy this game now as I'm not a fan of the turn-based random encounter system, but this game had a big impact on me in middle school. I loved how cinematic and character-focused it was as well as the world and exploration.
