Favorite Music Games

My favorite games that I play mainly because I love the music so much.

List items

  • My all time favorite music based game. The songs are great, there's a lot of variety to the music, the game itself is a joy to play, and the game is so wacky it's hard to forget. This is the first rhythm game that actually made me feel like I was really playing a song, which is very impressive considering that it's controlled with a standard PS2 controller.

  • This game will always hold a special place in my heart, even if I rarely ever play it now. The Simon Says style gameplay wasn't worthy of any awards, but the presentation and song selection made it incredibly enjoyable. I never did beat the final opponent, sadly enough.

  • The music was easily 50% of the fun to the Jet Set games, and the most compelling reason to play them for hours on end. I still break out the soundtracks every now and then.

  • It's Rock Band. It's the greatest fake instrument game in the world. At least until Rock Band 2 arrives.

  • What needs to be said, it's Rez. It was one of the best games on the Dreamcast, and now it's one of the best games on Xbox Live Arcade. It's timeless and brilliant.

  • This came with the TurboDuo, and was one of the best games for the system by far. The music was outstanding, even if the side scrolling shoot'em-up gameplay wasn't unique.

  • The follow up to Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder featured an even harder rocking soundtrack. The music was "real" and it was fantastic, putting it sonically ahead of anything else that existed at the time. To this day it still has some of the best music featured in any game.

  • Gameplay-wise, not one of the best games I've ever played, but that hardly matters. This is the first game I ever played that had fully voiced acting, thanks to the cd-rom format. Also thanks to the cd-rom, the music was fantastic. Music from, and inspired by, the Ys franchise is among my favorite music to listen to.
