To be fit or not?

Hey guys.  Ok I used to be a gym junkie.  Basically I would work till 4:30 and be at the gym by 4:45 and workout (run and lift like crazy) until about 7.  Go home eat...play games...sleep...repeat.  Since having a kid (2 1/2 years ago), I haven't done dick when it comes to the gym.  I definitely put on weight, but I'm not to huge.  Since having a kid, time is my enemy.  If I do the gym, I need to sacrifice gaming and family time.  If I skip the gym like I'm doing, things only go downhill.  I have a treadmill @ home so maybe I just need some motivation.  I tried the working out over my lunch hour, but that killed my afternoon.   What do you guys do?   Let me know what types of routine's you guys have and how you maintain them.

Peace out,

MD.

Using the treadmill sounds like a good idea, even if its just for half an hour here or there. If you start to get bored with the treadmill, save up for a cross trainer or something like that.

I do cardio every day.  An hour on the elliptical while listening to podcasts.  I used to be huge into lifting now not so much, though I'll lift every couple of months or so.

You can always work out at your house too. I usually go for a run around my neighborhood for about 45 minutes then every other day I alternate between push ups and bicycle curls. It doesn't make me huge but it at least keeps me fit.

Well, I've been vegan for 17 years, don't eat any fast food and hardly any junk (includng organic junk and processed soy crap), I cook the majority of my meals from fresh produce and dry beans and whole grains and don't eat big portions.

Hi, I thought I'd share my workout routine and to see if it helps.

- i go to the gym 4 or 5 times a week, but only for 45 minutes.
- two day split
- 2 chest, 2 bicep, 2 shoulder + 1 ab workout on day one
- 2 leg, 2 tricep, 2 back + 1 ab workout on day two
- 3 or 4 sets per workout, reps are up to you, depending on if you're going heavy or not
- 15 minutes of cardio in the morning before eating 2 or 3 times a week when i'm not feeling too tired
- i try to change what i do all the time, so preferably i never do the same exercise more than once a week, except maybe squats

i've tried tons of different splits, 3 day splits, 1 body part a day, full body workouts, but i like this the best and if i don't take too long between sets i'm in and out in 45 minutes, and still get everything worked good even though i'm only doing 2 exercies per bodypart per workout.

You're not going to like the answer, but here it is: Work out early in the morning.  It is the best time to get your exercise in.  The wife and kid are still asleep, so you don't miss any family time.  The only trade off is that you have to go to bed a little earlier.  But seriously, going to bed an hour and a half earlier is a small price to pay to be able to continue working out.  I get up at 4:00am, lift, run, and I'm home by 6:30am like nothing ever happened.  Try it.  After 2 weeks you will be hooked.

Put your treadmill outside, and run on it.

When inside, and your kid is around, challenge him/her to a first-to-ten push up race.

Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Krav Maga and Volleyball keeps me as fit as I would ever need to be.

Food doesint affect my weight in anyway.

How close is your work? You could Jog or Cycle there and back everyday? Sit ups, Push ups etc when your sitting around not actively doing something will all help.

I started doing P90X back in May and running 2-3 times a week (nothing major just 2.5-3.5 miles)

I'm not a big guy- just a scrawny nerdy dude, but if I can do P90X anybody can. Sounds like you're already capable of the sort of things P90X throws at you. The reason I recommend it is because you don't need much to do the routines. No gym required and the longest routine I think is Yoga X at 90 minutes. The shortest is Ab Ripper X at 15 minutes. The point being you don't need a lot of time to do the program. Hope this helps.

my suggestion is that if you could find an hour a day to gym, rather than 2 or so like you said you used to do, and if you could do that each week day, that would be very efficient exercise.

Just do a few push-ups and pull-ups every-other day. As long as you only eat when you really need to, you should be fine. Maybe go for a run 2 or 3 mornings a week.

I just don't care about myself, or my health, so I don't worry about that kind of thing, however seeing as you do I would suggest things like:

  • Try having weights at your desk when at work, or gaming, so that when you are waiting for stuff to happen you can do arm curls and the such. You may not notice any immediate "burn" as they call it, but if you do it enough throughout the day I would imagine it would be the same as one long session- or at least more then what you are doing now.
  • If they allow it, try having an exercise ball as your seat at work or when at home and gaming. That way you work on your abdomen while you game/work.
  • Walk/bike instead of driving when you can. If you need to go to the store down the road to get milk/bread/eggs/booze try walking or biking there instead of driving.
  • I know you said you don't want to, but take 20-30 min every few days from your family/game time and just go do something. You will gain the time back in the years you will add to your life by being healthy. If you are worried about less time with one thing, try alternating between taking time from gaming one day and family the other.

So ya, that's all I could think of off the top of my mind. Keep in mind of course that this is coming from a guy who has never worked out a day in his life, and debates how long he can put off going to the bathroom to take a piss and how much his bladder can take before he pisses himself because he hates moving that much. So ya, I may not be at health trainer level of knowledge here.

I've lost 20 pounds by...doing nothing. Got almost no money, so kinda just been surviving off weird things, like croutons, healthier than chips and taste better, so if you want to lose weight, just be dirt poor :D

I've never been a fan of the gym. For a good while now, I've just been working with dumbbells, barbells, and a bench for equipment. Most of my work is done with dumbbells (no strength-imbalances, more consistent core work-out) and free body-weight. I've always found that, since my workout is all at home, it becomes far more difficult to make excuses and just say "I'll skip it for today".

Workout for maintenance instead of goals. You're looking at a false dichotomy of choice. Everyone can afford a 30-min walk/jog/run/dash in their life a couple times a week.

I walk/bike everywhere I need to be, take walks and jogs twice everyday and when situation permits I take long bike rides to cities closeby.
Next to that I think you have to lose what you gain.
So don't drive to the macdonalds, but walk or jog.

Works for me...

I don't have a kid, so I have a lot of time on my hands. I got to school tuesdays wednesdays and thursdays. Work every other weekend, so that leaves a lot of time for working out, and playing games. I only work out twice a week because my spotter works a lot.

Going for 4 mile jogs every other day would keep you in pretty good shape. Or walk/jog 2 mile till you can make it to 4 and build from there if you want. I also think that jogging outside is much better for motivation and it might be abit harder, but that's just personal preferance really. I think doing weights would just be a waste of time for you. If your anything like me it just makes you really moody all the time and unless your playing rugby or american football I don't see the point in being big.

You don't need to be a total gym rat to be healthy.  Do some exercises in the morning and/or at night.  You don't have to do a lot or for that long.

If you're looking to get in more cardio in your daily routine, I'd definitely would start with the treadmill, 30 minutes of interval training 3-4 times a week for 3 months will make a world of a difference. Or if you want to tone/build muscle while you shed a few pounds then you should go on Youtube.com and look for some specific cardio exercise you feel you could do, a few examples would be jumping jacks, jumping rope, burpees, mountain climber, steam worker, roll ups and hindu push ups. If you're really serious about losing weight, I'd say put off playing games for a few months and in that time that you would normally be playing games, just practice your workout there.
