Best of 2010

mernmern: Best of 2010
2010 was no 2009 and I hope no 2011, but there were some strong games that came out throughout the year.  As a result, the only game I have yet to open that may require consideration is AC Brotherhood.  I have some negative comments below only because we all know how strong these games are and this being a list, failings often impact an experience as much as the praiseworthy components.

List items

  • No game of 2010 grabbed and held my attention like Heavy Rain. The updated quicktime style combined with the loss of key characters and the automatic save system resulted in an ambiance and experience that I hope to never forget. There was no debate in my mind, Heavy Rain is the game of the year.

  • Is it wrong that I liked the story in the first game more? I also played it prior to the mining update and my singing compatriot died! However, I stuck with that ending because it made for a more tangible experience. I loved the graphics and game play.

  • At times it became tedious and the shooting was way too easy, but it was still an amazing open world with great characters and visuals. I should also note that I have never finished a GTA game, but I never considered walking away from RDR.

  • Mood. Lighting. Engaging story. Scares. Fun mechanics. This game, like Heavy Rain will stick with me.

  • I like Halo. This game while great, did not impact me in the way the original did. Sure, some people say Halo was not original and borrowed game play from other titles, but for me it was amazing. I had not played games for about 4 years through college and Halo made me wonder if that was a wise choice. Reach had some amazing sequences but it was choppy and there were plot holes. The online is unmatched.

  • Now if only I could hit jumps as in Burnout Paradise. Regardless, no game I have played results in the absurd elevated heart rate I experience while playing this both online and alone. I just wish I was good. I passed on Blur for this and while I think that was the correct call, the mayhem experienced during the Blur demo still lingers. I might have to pick it up to determine if NfS was actually better.

  • I was shocked when I loved the campaign. The story was fun and the plot twists were a nice change for this franchise. Dare I say, I may actually be interested in Activision's next COD title.

  • I didn't have it in me to Play Dead Rising 2, but I loved this downloadable game/preview. I was on a mission to get the achievements and the small area and short time limit allowed me to simply enjoy the game as mistakes were not too costly.

  • It cost $1. It was worth more, but I never would have played it if it has been priced higher. Make sense?

  • Oh how you eat up my time. Of course I had to stop playing because of the dreaded DLC error which repeatedly resulted in corrupt save files. Had the game not been broken for two months, it would have been much higher on this list.

The characters are wonderful and the quests are varied and seemingly endless. This game is what I thought it would be and without question, that is a good thing.

PS. Obsidian, Please put all the cards in a separate storage list. PLEASE!
