Resident Evil 5 and Change.

During all the hype and craze of E3 I was browsing some forums (neogaf, gameFAQ's,etc) and listening to the Giant Bomb podcast. I realized that a lot of people are of the opinion that Resident Evil 5's control system should be augmented in a way that would allow shooting while moving. Many people thought it would be a natural progression for the franchise after several games, while in the interim of RE squeals. Have improved on its "over the shoulder" 3rd person shooter control scheme. The way I see it the changes brought to this system are not the natural progression but an adaptation of the system for shooter mechanics. If Resident Evil 5 incorporated the "version" of its control scheme adapted for shooters, it would be a weird game.

Perhaps some people want RE5 to be a shooter, which is pretty understandable. When considering the changes to the gameplay that occured in RE4 it seems to be going that way. For me though, it still is very much a survival horror game. If you were to change the controls so fundamentally as to add strafing the tension and sense of fear would leave the game. One of the major factors that makes the Resident Evil games fun for me is that tension. One of the biggest factors in being scared by a game is not feeling empowered like I do in a shooter. I don't feel confident, I don't look at a horde of enemies (like in say, the Gears of War 2 trailers) and assume I can easily take them out. The fact that you aren't able to respond to your enemies with much immediacy is a large part of what makes that game scary.

Capcom finally struck a balance between that tension with the controls without totally gimping your experience in RE4, I don't see whats to gain by changing that in RE5.
