Milpool: Best of 2010

List items

  • Rockstar does it again. Not too many developers can have fantastic gameplay and story eclipsed by even more fantastic characters, writing and voice work. All topped off with one of the best video game scores of the year. If this was a movie it would be oscar worthy. Luckily it's a game, and one of the best games to come out in a long time.

  • Common themes among the best games year in and year out are a great story and great characters, and not too many games do it better than Mass Effect. Coupled with a much improved combat system from Mass Effect, add the RPG character building elements and a fantastic score, and amazing set pieces and you have one of the best games of the year.

  • This is without a doubt the best Halo game in the franchise. It's amazing how much better this game looks compared to Halo 3: ODST. The story continues to be grandious, characters are solid and the visuals are among the best on the 360. The multiplayer is an example for all other developers of how to put together a multiplayer suite. Everything, from the amount of content to player tracking, stats and UI is done to perfection. This is one of the best gaming experiences you are going to have on any platform.

  • Treyarch managed to release another solid installment into the series, amongst all the other goings on with the franchise and questions regarding the future. The multiplayer is as good as it gets, the new game modes are a welcome addition, and the tweaks made to the perks, player customizations and "COD Points" were all well done.

  • Probably the single most creative game to come out this year. A buzz followed it unlike any other and it went from obscurity to fame faster than anyone expected, least of which the one-person developer.

  • Maybe the surprise of the year, this game was very well made and fun to play. They didn't do anything new for the action/adventure genre, but everything they did was done very well.

  • This was just as much an interactive movie as it was a game. Very immersive, interesting story that doesn't stop for anything (even you), and great fleshed out characters. Showed that quick-time events could make a relevant and appealing game in 2010.

  • Struggled with putting this on my list, maybe because it causes me pain just to think about this game. But I can't deny that it is a well made game. Tons of content, great animation, funny cutscenes. And most importantly they managed to make a frustratingly difficult game that has you coming back for more.

  • I had to think twice about adding this game. Why? Because it uses the Fallout 3 engine and all the jank and bugs that come along with it. That being said, like Fallout 3, this game is enormous. It is one of the most immersive worlds in any single player game. You could play through it hundreds of times and never have the same experience.

  • This was a solid offering, both SP and MP, that I wish I played more of. While it got lost among other MP games that came along, It's a game that I can always go back to and have a good time playing. The SP is the reason this game is so great, the characters are funny and have a good chemistry and you sympathise for them. Truly great writing.
