Get Jacked About...

Disclaimer: Written when drunk.
Listened to Giantbombs new podcast today, and the guys discussed Systems opening music/theme. Im not the type to really notice this kind of stuff, but I remember most of them. So looking back of the yesteryear of Video Game Systems, I can revoke (even if slightly) the memories to my old game systems firing up. The Genesis comes to mind more than most. I do hate how most use the past as the best, even though its not even close. The Playstation 3s opening muzak is by far the best. It makes me even pumped for a movie that I barely have any interest in. Its orchestral and very diliberate to what it is about to offer.
I don't say this because I am a fanboy of anything particular. I love everything if it entertains, love what each the 360, PS3, and the Wii offers. But the Playstation just gets me jazzed.

What Ive Been Playing: March 14, 2009

Right now, I am pretty much vested in my Playstation 3 (mainly, because I foolishly sold my 360 a couple months ago...I do miss it so). Downloaded Burnout Paradise via PSN for $20 (unless you want the Pass the Party pack which is $30) which is straight up a steal. I owned it on the 360 when it first came out, and instantly loved it. At its core, Paradise is a straight blast to play. Graphics are fast and fluid and really immerses you into the city. When you are flying down the road, hitting ramp after ramp, gate after gate, you are completely immersed and you don't want to end the flow. There is plenty to do whether its to race, smash cars into the median, evade other cars coming against you, or just plain cruise and explore the city. I have yet to try out online action, because I am of the ilk that I need get pretty solid before I jump into the fray. I'll post an update once I do.

I guess this is a throwback edition because I also picked up GTA 4 for the PS3. Used to own this title also for the 360 but never really gave it much of a chance. Going back to it, it pretty much reminds me of why I was so-so in the first place. The dating scene on it, in my opinion, is a straight waste of time. Why do I care at all about dating some chic in a virtual world? And for some reason, the game just feels slow to me. Sure there is plenty to do, but most of it just feels like filler for me. Hunt down 200 pigeons. Really? I'm good, thanks. And why does Rockstar feel the need to give these socialpaths (lead characters) a story line as if they have a soul when I have stats keeping track of how many people Ive killed. I do like Niko as a character though, but the cut scenes really don't transition into the actual gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the game, but still doen't fit all the hype it got.

About to download Cave Story, via a recommendation from the Rebel FM podcast. Will let you know how it is.

MMoooo, the Craving

Up to about 5 months, I was full on into Warhammer Online. WAR was highly enjoyable with tons of great PvP action. I did get burned out on it pretty quick though for a variety of reasons, but it didn't have the lasting appeal that I look for. All classes felt overpowered and wasn't very difficult to get the best gear. Right after, I tried picking up Everquest 2, which is supposedly one of the best MMO's as far as deep lore, tons of content, and so on. But I tried forcing it, so I decided to take an MMO break and until recently, picked back up EQ2.
I have been craving a really good MMO recently, and knew some friends where still on EQ2 so decided to give it a fresh go. Got into a quality guild instantly, and the player base is very friendly. The lore is fantastic, and it is packed with content, with new content coming down the pipe all the time. But a key ingredient was missing: fun. From the get go, I never felt like I was having a good time, and playing almost felt like a chore. Questing: boring. Crafting: boring. I can see why people are into, but its just not my type.
I am still on the hunt for a good one, so I am in the midst of a Eve Online trial. From the what I gathered from reading about it is the monstrous learning curve, which is all good in my opinion. Thats all good. MMOs are not supposed to be easy cheesy, or they werent back in the day. Definitely enjoy the space setting. I don't have any qualms with the fantasy genre, at all, but its definitely not original. Don't have much time vested in it so far, so my ruling is still out, but can see the upside to it.
World of Warcraft is this huge elephant in the room that I am trying to avoid. I have yet to play since Burning Crusade so have not tried out WotLK yet. But I fear the WoW. Years of disappeared from my life when I last played and that scares me. So the search still continues: will I ever find another MMO that will fully pull me in, or I am just too picky? The search goes on...
