Games That Give Me Shivers, Freak Me Out, or are Hauntingly Dark

I'm a wussbag when it comes to scary games but I've acquired the exact same reactions watching playthroughs as if I were to play them. At least with watching them the game would actually progress because otherwise I would be too freaked out to continue xD. These games are ones that I find creepy, haunting, freaky, etc. and generally scared me the majority of the time.

List items

  • That monster music...

  • The clanking and general sound of rusty machinery, plus the intimidating silence of Pyramid Head...aaaaah!

  • The last decent Silent Hill game made. I found that the villain made it creepy and haunting.

  • Perfect in unsettling the player and generally hiking up the paranoia.

  • May not be scary for some, but just thinking about how all the people died horribly and them implanting their Necromorphness into others is more than unsettling.

  • It was not scary to me personally, but still a little spooky and haunting. Surprisingly good storyline and gameplay as well.

  • "Jesus Christ!!!!!!" is all I have to say about it. That and "Oh Jesus!"

  • Whether or not you read the very short story that inspired this game, it is full of Fridge Horror and "Oh my God, what the hell?" moments that make this an easy fit for this list.

  • Expanding upon the original Slenderman game, it follows the same principal but packs way more creepy atmosphere and world-exploring into it, as well as waaaay better graphics. Pretty trees :3

  • Oh God, what is that?! Oh Jesus, killitkillitkillitkillit!!!!! Jump scares, melancholy atmosphere that reeks of a depressed mind, and just plain creepiness make this a good Half Life 2 mod.

  • While I find that the first game has too much shooting and not enough "scary", overall the underlying details that surround the objectives of each installment are particularly dark by themselves and only continue to become more and more creepy as new information is gathered along the way.

  • Frozen Soviet era Russian ghost-zombie submariners terrorizing you the protagonist.

  • Creepy tentacle powers from the depths of hell. Sounds good to me.

  • I love the unique "crime scene" gameplay but whackos coming out of the woodwork at the drop of a hat is also a creep factor worth mentioning.

  • This game filled me with dread over the endless tragedies but still a kickass game and worth all of its hype.

  • I found it difficult to believe that a pixel game could be scary but this one is. If not then maybe you'll feel a little panic and dread trying to hide from those..things.
