In case you're still confused Vinny, ammo conservation doubles the ammo capacity of all primary weapons. Research credits are permanent bonuses that shorten the development time of all research and foundry projects relevant to them. They are mostly unlocked by capturing live aliens and interrogating them - the beam weapon credit was unlocked when you interrogated a sectiod early on.
It was funny that he shot down doing the ammo upgrade because he was interested in an armor one he thought would apply to everybody and then stopped reading its description one line short.
