My Top Ten

In no particular order

List items

  • The first game to ever evoke an emotional reaction in me. Beautiful music plus beautiful visuals, and a great story too, all based on some incredible co-op gameplay.

  • The deepest small-scale strategy FPS ever made. When you watch a 4v4 game between high ranked players, individual skill takes a back seat to team communication and map tactics. Even on the smallest scale, the one on one confrontation, the amount of attack and defence options available almost puts this on par with Street Fighter.

  • Known to my friends and I as Street Gangs, we used to play the hell out of this. Probably the most repeatedly-completed game I ever had. Also, the best birthday present I ever got.

  • I shot my friends, I shot russians, I shot scientists, I shot Natalya for being so stupid, I blew her up with proximity mines too. I shot her in her stupid face with the RCP90. I did that on behalf of the computer which she kept punching.

  • There is nothing I can really say about this game that won't launch me into a page-long essay, so I'll leave it at this -

Damn elf didn't hear me coming.

  • My first machine was an Atari 2600 which I played ona black and white television in the spare room. This was the game which I put all my time into, well, this and Missile Command, but Berzerk was the one that I loved the most.

I was also crap at it.

  • I knew San Andreas like the back of my hand, so this was probably the most anticipated release of my life. What a great city! How cool are the cars? So much to do and explore, and a fantastic physics engine to abuse and expoit.

  • When I got this game, I grabbed my old skateboard, went outside and landed my first kickflip in like ten years. Then I axed myself in a pretty hardcore fashion, so I was glad that I could go back inside and kick ass from the couch.

This game summed up everything I love about sandbox level design. San Vanelona, after San Andreas, is my second-favourite playground.

  • One of the most incredibly realised environments ever to grace a videogame, Bioshock manages to squeeze in some great customisation with the plasmids and invites you to invest yourself in the game on an emotional level.

  • The be-all and end-all of modern football games. Great visuals coupled with a well thought out team tactics system made this the Porsche to Pro Evo's Corolla. Well geared for sitting around with your mates and a couple of beers. I have probably logged more time into FIFA 09 this year than any other game.
