As someone in the convention industry on the hotel side- don't be mad at PAX.
The thing about PAX West is the same reason why many other events that canceled in relatively short notice- the way the contracts are usually the event cannot cancel themselves without a lot of fees. A lot of events barely break even and the fees of canceling can bankrupt them, so they have to wait for the state of emergencies to pull the plug on the event before they're allowed to cancel it, otherwise they will have to pay a lot of fees towards the hotels and convention spaces they have deals with.
It's basically a big game of chicken, where the event holders are probably hoping for the state/county to cancel the ability to hold the event, but they cant say that it will be canceled until it happens. So they cannot cancel at this time, or even mention that they hope to delay it, unless the place they are hosting either offers a delay themselves or the state/county they are hosting in calls out for a continued state of emergency at that date so them canceling/delaying the event is a force majeure and won't cause them to go bankrupt.
