So without admitting guilt of any kind, piracy is a super gray area in my opinion. Is it/should it be illegal? Yes. Is it morally wrong? Maybe.
Hypothetically if I were to have pirated games in my life, it was because I legitimately couldn't afford them at the time. Does that make it morally right? No. I now have an extensive enough library of purchased games where I don't have the need to pirate anything, I can just play something I already own. Now, on the other hand, I will never judge someone who pirates a game because they cannot afford it, and neither should you. While supporting game developers is obviously super important, and they pour their souls into their creations, I am a firm believer that your financial well being shouldn't dictate your ability to enjoy the same things the rest of us do. I've seen quotes from several musicians (Garret Rapp from The Color Morale for example) and game developers (I believe Notch is on record) who, to paraphrase, basically said: "Hey, if you can't afford it and need to pirate it, just pay for it when you can." Which is basically how I feel about the issue. If you really have to pirate it, try to pay for it eventually when you can, the developers/artists deserve it.
And not to make this post too long, but for fuck's sake we need to change how copyright law is punished when it comes to piracy. If you get caught, your punishment should be paying for whatever it is you pirated at the MSRP at the time of download. Publishers suing for thousands of dollars is insane, and unjust.
TL;DR: Poor people should be able to experience the same joy as the rest of us. If you can afford the game, don't be an asshole, buy it.
