My top 10 games of this generation

List items

  • Best game ever? Maybe. My favourite game ever? Quite possibly. Best game of this generation? Indubitably.

  • FROM's crowning achievement. Dark Souls may have paved the way with its interwoven world of mystery and wonder, Sekiro may have perfected the demanding combat loop, but Bloodborne married Miyazaki and friends' aesthetics and mechanics in such style that I doubt we'll see it surpassed.

  • What a beautiful gem. Now if only I could finish that final boss.

  • The very definition of a gaming delight.Everything about this game is fun. The levels, the jumping, the outfits, the music. Everyone in my household except the dog has played and finished this game. That's Nintendo magic.

  • Many would consider this the game of the generation, a choice that would be impossible to argue with.

  • The best swordfights in gaming. Plus a headless giant ape.

  • A perfect game in many ways. Breathtaking in scope yet intensely personal in its focus, mechanically satisfying but accessible. Though it sets up a continuation of the story, I kind of wish they leave it at that. There really is no way a sequel could surpass this game, is there?

  • The brain tingling one gets from successfully navigating its combat puzzles are second to none. The sense of nincompoopery one gets after making a mistake that costs one the battle is also without compare.

  • the best deck builder in a decade of great deck builders.

  • I stand by everything I wrote in 2014 about this game being in many ways a disappointment. Its worlds are small and hemmed in, its story is nonsensical and its systems restrictive. And yet, its core gameplay loop is magnificent, the art design is spectacular and the structure has been replicated by every other game this generation. It may not be as good as most of the games on this list, but its influence is probably greater than the rest put together.
