Broken Age Review

No Caption Provided

(Note: I'm a backer for Broken Age and it's currently one of the only ways to actually play the game. My money supported Broken Age so I'm obviously biased. Nevertheless, this review is for non-backers who are interested in purchasing Broken Age.)

Broken Age is both a huge risk for Double Fine and a return to form for them. Broken Age's origin is a popular one of initially a small revival of the old school adventure game genre with a small asking price of 400k. This was back when Kickstarter wasn't the monolithic giant that it is now. The project raised much more than that and went as high as 3.4 million dollars. The development of Broken Age can be called rocky at best with expectations being much higher than the Broken Age team ever dreamed of. As a backer I've had the privilege of seeing behind the curtain of game development and have seen the best and worst from the dev team. I had high hopes for Broken Age and the documentary gave me a higher investment for the project than any video game that I've ever looked forward to. Hell, any thing that has your name in the credits is hopefully something that you're proud of being involved with. So call me a fan boy or anything like that, but I won't back down from my stance on Broken Age. After much anticipation I must say that I really enjoyed my time with Broken Age.

Broken Age is a beautiful game. No doubt about it.

The best thing that can be said for Broken Age is how great it looks. Every single environment has the look of it being hand painted and treated with care. You can notice it from looking around by how many things have smiley faces or from how everything seems to fit together perfectly. It was a joy to walk around every new area to see how bizarre yet familiar every environment looks. It's accompanied by a wonderful score that fits each new area. My personal favorite came from Shay's part as it reflects the space ship theme. All of it can fall apart if the actual game play and story don't mesh together well. That isn't the case for Broken Age.

Broken Age's story is one of two characters that are each in different time periods and different situations that are worlds apart from each other. They both can seemingly never meet each other yet both have similar situations. Broken Age is a story of personal triumph from oppressive adults. Whether it be Shay's computer mother or Vella's grandmother both are set out to accomplish self-sacrifice for a goal that is of high importance. They both must decided if they should rebel against their elders in order to break tradition. You'll be able to aid both of them in any order you want to. I went with Shay's story first as I was more excited by space. Without spoiling anything I found the story and dialogue of Broken Age to be charming, funny, and nostalgic. This is the first adventure game that Tim Schafer has made in a long time. Grim Fandango was the last big adventure game that he's worked on as a writer. You could easily notice that he wrote Broken Age by how funny it is. The dialogue tree in particular made me laugh several times. It also has a lot of humor from using your inventory on any thing or one in the environment in order to get some kind of reaction. I haven't played a traditional adventure game since Tim Schafer left Lucas Arts so it was truly a nostalgic trip back to the days when adventure games were big on PC. That said, Broken Age isn't just a trip down memory lane. It's a story of breaking away from the past and paving a new future.

Broken Age's environmental art is brimming full with creativity.
Broken Age's environmental art is brimming full with creativity.

Double Fine promised a return to old school adventure games and it's a promise that was kept. Broken Age play like you typical adventure game with both a mouse cursor and an inventory. In Broken Age you'll have to solve many small puzzles in order to continue forward with the story. Some of these solutions make sense but others are as ridiculous as you'd expect from old adventure game logic. Luckily, it doesn't suffer from pixel hunting problems and brutally difficult puzzle logic. However, I wish that the game offered a button to let you know what kind of items are in the environment as most of the items that you'll put into your inventory don't stand out as well as I'd like.

I also found most of the situations to be fairly easy to solve. I would've liked some more complex puzzles to be in the game. There's also a arm grabbing mini-game in Shay's section that is harder than it should be for something that is necessary to solve in order to beat the game. It's at times far too easy and mostly overly difficult for such a simple mini-game that isn't all that fun. It's also a game that deserves the Beta moniker as the game crashed multiple times for me. It also had numerous bugs such as text being unreadable and characters getting stuck in the environment. These bugs and crashes are an unfortunate part of the early release for us backers but hopefully it shouldn't be a problem once the game is released to the public.

Easily my favorite part of Broken Age.
Easily my favorite part of Broken Age.

It was probably impossible to fulfill the high expectations that many felt after the huge success of the Double Fine Kickstarter. However, as a backer I'm glad to say that my expectations were met for Broken Age. It certainly isn't the greatest adventure game ever but it's still a well worth your time and money. Broken Age is a highly polished journey that has memorable voices from Jack Black, Jennifer Hale, and even Elijah Wood. These voices were treated right and aren't simply cameos. Everything surrounding Broken Age is filled with the love and care that you'd expect a Double Fine game to have. That's the same with Broken Age but it's also amplified higher than ever before. A lot if riding on Broken Age and I felt that they succeed in making a great adventure game that can hang with the best of the genre. This could all go to shit if the second Act in Broken Age sucks but I'm confident that it won't after playing the first Act. It isn't perfect of course. I still feel that the mechanics and puzzles in the game were far too easy to solve or simply obtuse enough for me to be confused for longer than I'd like. Hopefully the second act has better puzzles to solve. The story and everything is strong enough that it overshadows the puzzles but it still hurts the overall package. I can't wait to finish the story of Broken Age as a backer and a fan of old school adventure games.

My favorite games from this Generation.

The PS4's release date is near so it seemed appropriate to talk about some of my favorite games from this generation. It'd be extremely difficult to come up with a list of my top ten games of this generation but I will let you know some of my favorite games from this generation. So let's kick it off with a game that hopefully everyone has played by now.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

If I were to name my game of the generation It'd probably be this game. The level design in SMG2 is top notch with tons of creativity oozing out from every level. I picked it over SMG due to how difficult some of the levels in the sequel can be. It's also an accomplishment to be impressive visually on the Wii when it wasn't even in HD. SMG2 proved that gameplay is ultimately the most important thing about games. The new Yoshi levels were also a blast and something that made SMG2 better than the first one. SMG2 is a game that everyone should play since it's why I fell in love with games in the first place. It's pure fun that only Nintendo can provide.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

I've always been a huge FPS shooter guy with games like Quake, Halo, and Battlefield being multiplayer games that I spent a lot of time on. Modern Warfare is one of those games that changed everything. While Call of Duty isn't beloved as it used to be MW was truly innovative at it's time. With exp being a big deal online and the perk system being wholly unique it dominated the gaming landscape with fun gameplay and addictive RPG hooks. The systems that MW weren't original but when combined with the frantic fast face of the multiplayer matches it created a captivating multiplayer experience. MW devoured my whole life for a couple of weeks as I kept trying to unlock everything that it had. The map design was also great as each one was memorable in it's own right. The single player was also an added bonus of fun with a bombastic campaign with many memorable moments. I'm sure we all still remember how shocking the nuclear bomb scene was.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

This game was the reason why I had to own a PS3. It was one of those games that made me realize how games had changed into narrative focused story games that also had good gameplay. The story wasn't unique in any way but it was how well it was told with a great cast of characters. The actors truly changed the dialogue and cut scenes in the game as the graphics made them come to life. The level design and crazy set pieces also made it stand out above every other game. I still remember how my mind was blown away by the building falling while still shooting enemies moment. Uncharted 2 was a great way to start off my time with the PS3. I should also mention that the multiplayer was great in it's own right. I still prefer Uncharted 3's multiplayer over it though.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective

I'm a big Phoenix Wright fan so I knew that I'd probably like Ghost Trick. I came out loving my time with Ghost Trick as it still has one of my favorite art styles from any game. The story in Ghost Trick is a fascinating one that only the minds of the Phoenix Wright writes could come up with. It's filled with great characters but the only one that really matters is Missile. The gameplay is also surprisingly great with being able to manipulate objects as a ghost. Solving the game's puzzles in a set amount of time also created a lot of tension which is rare in puzzle games. The soundtrack is still stuck in my head to this day. Go play Ghost Trick.

Bastion

Bastion is a game that I would say is pretty much perfect. It has great combat that is designed brilliantly. Each weapon in the game is viable in it's own way. There are many different enemies that make combat in the challenging and fun. The combat in general feels great with impressive visuals. The art style truly made Bastion feel like something that was unlike any other game. The soundtrack is one that is very special to me and is still in my head. The story of Bastion isn't clear as it doesn't try to tell you everything about it's universe. It gives you enough to go on in order to keep playing. The narrator is also a great way to tell the story without needing cut scenes or anything that stops you from controlling your character. It's a game that respects you enough to tell you the importance of the story yet letting you ignore it entirely by just playing the game without being force feed the story. Bastion is a highly polished game that was just made by a small amount of people. Hopefully Transistor can overcome my lofty expectations.

I have many more favorite games from my generation but for now theses are at the top of my list. Be sure to share some of your favorite games from the generation below and let's remember this generation on good terms!

Pokemon Relapse

No Caption Provided

If you told me that I'd spend over 50 hours on another Pokemon game I'd call you crazy. My period with Pokemon was an obsessive period back in the 90's when the Pokemon TV show became big. Like most kids in that period I played Pokemon Red and loved it. One of my favorite genres has always been RPG's and Pokemon's unique take on it was brilliant. As a fan of art it's mostly due to the design of the Pokemon which has been a big factor in which Pokemon I'll be putting in my 6 man team. I've found the choice of which Pokemon to be with for my journey to be a tough choice considering how many Pokemon I love art wise. Plus I found most of them to be ideal for any situation. It adds even more choices with which 4 moves you want your Pokemon to have for combat(4 moves has been too little for me). With that said I played every single Pokemon game up until the DS games came out. I was in the high school period in which you wanted to act cool and at the time Pokemon wasn't. Like a lot of people that are playing Pokemon X/Y it feels good to be back home.

#TeamFroakie
#TeamFroakie

I don't think I'm a sucker for nostalgia and yet I've still been oddly charmed by Pokemon Y. The whole concept of letting a young child go out into the wild and have an adventure just days after moving into a new town is just strange. If any parents are playing this game I doubt they'd enjoy the concept of letting their kid explore the world by themselves. Obviously the Pokemon Universe is an alternate one in which Pokemon exist as our so called friends that we battle with. The sheer brutality that our Poke friends have to endure remind me of the horrors of actual cock fighting. It's strange that a beloved kid's series has that kind of resemblance. The other aspect that has also gained my interest is the Pokemon Center. In this universe we've actually achieved spontaneous universal health care for these monsters and these centers do heal them for free. Pokemon death also hasn't been as hard hitting as it was like in Lavender Town's Pokemon Tower graveyard section. The town theme still gives me the chills to this day.

So the new Pokemon game doesn't change the formula too much. The biggest addition for me is seeing a lot of new Pokemon that were introduced in the 4th and 5th gen. Pokemon veterans won't agree with that point but it feels like a brand new game to me. I'll admit to staying up late in order to look up certain Pokemon that I hadn't battled before on the internet. This also made my quest to catch every Pokemon that I would see be more important than ever before. They also introduced a brand new Pokemon type which is called fairy and is basically a nightmare for any dragon Pokemon. The addition was great to me since I'd always thought that dragon Pokemon were thought of as first class citizens when compared to other Pokemon. The best new thing about the game are the visuals which is huge considering how many animations had to be made for 800+ Pokemon and a lot of different moves to account for. I was a fan of sprites but I'm glad that the handheld games have finally gone 3D. The open world is also 3D with 4 way movement being removed in order to introduce free movement for your trainer.

Speaking of your trainer I love that they finally added customization for your trainer as you can now buy clothes for them. I've easily spent most of my money on new clothes for my trainer. My only complaint is that you don't have many options overall and it's crazy that you can't see all the clothes items instead of flying to different shops that have different clothes that isn't available everywhere. I've spent a lot of time with the online features which are improved from my previous experience with the Pokemon games. The PSS system is surprising considering how bad most of the online systems are for 3DS games. My favorite feature has easily been Wonder Trade which lets you trade your Pokemon for any random Pokemon. I've had a lot of laughs getting ridiculous trades such as trading a Weedle for a Gengar. The worst aspect of it is being taken out of the internet for closing the 3DS or going to the home screen. This process is poor and I wish it was better. Pokemon Y doesn't change the series for good but it's a big improvement for me. It's great to see these Pokemon in 3D for the first time on handhelds. I'm in love with Pokemon again.

Making friends with assholes: My journey through SMT4

No Caption Provided

I came into SMT4 with my SMT experience being already filled with by Persona 3 and 4. It's tough for me to appreciate the mainline SMT franchise considering that I entered it with the more casual Persona games. Saying Persona and casual in the same sentence will probably get me crucified by some angry Persona fans but when compared to SMT it's certainly justified. From various forum threads I've noticed a sort of childish rivalry between mainline SMT fans and Persona fans. It's still a silly fanboy rage-fest most of the time but in between the shit I've noticed some valid arguments for both franchises. The SMT games are a lot more darker than the Persona games as they focus more on post-apocalyptic stories. Persona 3 has some dark stuff in it but it isn't as dark as SMT is most of the time. Persona is more like Final Fantasy with party members and usually has a lighter tone(I can't speak for Persona 1 and 2 since I haven't played them). Both games are grindy but SMT has been deemed to be the most difficult by fans. All of this preamble is to let you know that I'm new to SMT and I finally decided to try out Shin Megami Tensei 4.

Hustlin' for your Play Coins.
Hustlin' for your Play Coins.

I'm happy to report that I've enjoyed my 20 hour adventure in SMT4 so far(I'll admit that I tried to play SMT4 during bedtime but actually feel asleep for around 7 hours so the hour count is a lie). Much of the combat is like the Persona games without the 4 party member dynamic and other things that most fans know about. Most notably the thing that has been messing with me the most is that Zan is Garu in this game. The combat is a lot more difficult due to the fact that in any battle a demon can one shot you by just attacking you with your weakness. Thus it gives them another turn and I soon have to pay another ample amount of play coins to that old jerk. I won't admit to being motivated to run a lot more due to this old guys' antics. Besides dying a whole lot I've just liked how quick fights usually are. I stop playing most JRPGs due to how slow turn-based combat can be at times. That's why I love games like Tales of games and more. I also actually play this game on the bus which is something that I rarely do. Having a big RPG like SMT 4 on the has been neat due to being able to play it each day for a couple of minutes instead of just staying at home and playing it for far too long.

These guys don't hold a candle to any Persona cast. Also, fuck you Navarre.
These guys don't hold a candle to any Persona cast. Also, fuck you Navarre.

My main complaints come with the story which hasn't interested me for a long time. The whole Samurai universe is not that exciting. The characters also aren't all that fleshed out which is disappointing so far. I'm sure they'll get better but the game hasn't given much scenes to let these characters grow. The only real emotional response I can give is to hope that Navarre is dead or something much worse. Seriously, fuck that guy. My favorite characters have been the demons which I didn't expect. Some lines of dialogue are just so weird that I've been laughing at how ludicrous the process of gathering demons is. My favorite line is probably "Are you a monkey? "Indeed" Great! I always wanted a monkey pal!" The whole process of talking to demons is so obtuse as to finding out what makes certain demons tick. Most of the time they're jerks so be careful when talking to demons. They can kill you at any time and they'll let you know that constantly during talks. THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING ABOUT IT IS GIVING DEMONS WHAT THEY WANT AND THEN THEY JUST SUDDENLY LEAVE! FUCK DEMONS!!

I've mostly just been listening to the battle theme over and over so you should to! I'm having a great time with SMT4 in general. My favorite parts are gathering demons and fusing them. It's still a great system that rewards me for my hard work. I also have to say that the game looks great in the third person mode. I'm glad that they went with this instead of having it in first person mode. I'm to finally be playing another big JRPG! I love these huge games and I can't wait to keep playing it. Here's hoping that the bosses don't keep fucking me up over and over again!! I need my play coins old man!
