Is Doom Eternal too far away from what Doom is? I love Doom 2016, but somehow everything I've seen of Doom Eternal just doesn't seem right. It might be, and it seems like it is an absolutely fantastic game. But it just doesn't seem like Doom.
In my opinion there are two inspirations necessary for Doom to be Doom. 1. Evil Dead series 2. Aliens 1986. Comedic sci-fi horror, with absurdly old-school terrestrial weapons(i.e. 20th century shotguns, and chainsaw, and pistol).
The absurd brutality of 20th century weapons in a futuristic world is part of the feel of Doom. But what I'm mentioning, I know, is only part of the issue. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly is wrong with Doom Eternal.
I think somehow it's time for giant bomb to reinvent itself. Something is amiss. Whiskey media days were the best. Norm and Will were too good of a combination. Will talking down to and making Norm uncomfortable was one of the best things to watch.
Another classic thing worth watching was Dave and Drew and Vinny trying to do simulation games.
Recapturing the past is never the way to go, but something is bland about this kind of site now. What is worth doing in game journalism?
Whatever giant bomb is now, it feels to me more than ever now like just another voice.
I think Jan Can Cook is the best thing recently because it's so stupid and odd for a game site. All of Abby's stuff is fantastic too. Abby is a one person show.
Dan tried to push giant bomb in some great directions, but now without him... I fear giant bomb is going to be even less risky.
You guys have to lean into the risk. And work hard to make fools of yourselves. And do things that are outside your comfort zone. And ruffle feathers.
I was just listening to Jean Baudin.... That awesome bassist from way back on Giant Bomb.
And I was thinking... it would so awesome to see the Big Live Live Show Live make a comeback, but with everyone that was ever a Giant Bomb or OG Gamespot person of any kind.
Now the west coast is cookin. This is the best segment so far in a while from the west coast. Stupid is good. Lean hard into stupid. Love that Ben is not framed properly as he should never be, because he's just too tall for cameras, and cooking is exactly the kind of subject we should have on this video game website. More please.
