Louie, The Best Show of 2010

In a time where TV shows generally cater to the lowest common denominator, and a massive excess of channels and genres is vying for your attention, it's very rare that a show can be unique, and if it's unique, it's generally not successful (Firefly, for example).

Considering that, it's really a treat to watch a TV show that takes risks, is unique and different, and surprisingly Intelligent.

If you couldn't guess from the title, the show I'm talking about is Louie.

I was a big fan of Lucky Louie when it aired on HBO. It was a sitcom in the vein of shows we've all seen a million times, typical down-on-their-lucky family. However, the show managed to be funny and watchable thanks to HBO allowing it to be slightly dirtier than say, Everybody Loves Raymond.

Given that I loved the show (which was, to no surprise, a failure), I was ecstatic when I heard that Louis CK had another show with a different network in the works. It was announced, by the way, with this hilarious video:

If you asked me to describe Louie, I wouldn't know what to say. It's similiar.. kind of.. in structure to Seinfeld. It can be about the silly 'non-issues' things, and segments are split up (sometimes) between story and Louie giving stand up comedy. However, some clever twists are done on this and in the end, it's really not all that similiar to Seinfeld

Louie's greatest strength in my mind is that it changes every week. It's always refreshing and you never know what to expect. One episode might be tons of different, unrelated segments mixing between story and stand up. Next weeks might be drama, which is surprisingly well executed, especially given that this is a comedy show - I think? It definitely made me laugh more than anything else I've seen in years but in a strange way, It's not entirely a comedy. In fact, the fact that this show pulls off the balance is a testament to it's execution.

The show is also just plain weird. And weird in..a good way. Without spoiling anything, the shows first episode starts by staying very, very realistic in gritty, in the small details of things that can go wrong (to give a small example, opening a door for his date, and having her get stuck behind the door making it pointless and awkward) but having the show end with a completely over-the-top, unrealistic, completely unexpected and yet oddly understated moment. You never know what to expect with this show. It's a complete mess, and yet the mess is so well executed and calculated that Louie surely deserves the title of Best Show of 2010 (so far), and it should be checked out by everyone in the mood for something new, a comedy, a drama, and have a pallete that doesn't mind completely-offensive and yet not-offensive for the sake of being offensive.

This is also a show not a lot of people will get. And I don't mean that in a "you aren't smart enough" way.. It's just not something everyone will get.

Check it out.

I've always liked Louis C.K's stand-up, and I gotta say Louie is a really funny show. I only caught the two episodes that aired to close out the season but I definitely have a desire to seek out and enjoy the others.

I'm almost done on Hulu, i love that the show never really makes it clear how you're supposed to react to certain things. This is probably the most surreal thing on TV right now.

Anyone know how it's doing ratings-wise? I end every show thinking "that was great I wonder when it's going to be canceled" Personally, I can see it working with 1 season.

Also..."want to see something cool?"

I don't really know how the ratings were, but I do know there will be a season 2 and that's all that matters.

Yep, there's a season 2. Also, apparently the ratings were surprisingly good. I don't know the exact numbers, but my friend (who's into the numbers) told me it did well, and FX likes the show because it's also very cheap. Thus, season 2, and hopefully more.

Im throwing it out there but the first season was so damn good i think with a few more just like it it will surpass seinfeld and the office as the "perfect comedy show." Well maybe not to the mass public since seinfeld and (american) office is pretty clean and louie is actually doing something original and unique thats littered with filth and crude language, which personally i love since it makes it so damn real, it doesnt feel like prewritten hackey garbage.

Cant wait for season 2!

Louie is definitely one of the best shows this year. I've been a big fan of his for a long time, and I'm really happy to see him finally getting the success and recognition he deserves. The show is fucking hilarious and weird, and I can't wait for season 2. I love how uncomfortable watching certain episodes can make you, like the Bully episode. I wasn't really sure how to react to any of that, haha.

I dunno why but I really enjoyed Lucky Louie quite a bit more than Louie. But neither are as good as his actual stand-up.

Really enjoy his stand-up as well as this show. I love how within the course of a single episode, the mood can change between funny, serious, dramatic, surreal, and back to funny, all set to the backdrop of equally mundane and bizarre situations. It's such a unique show, I'm glad FX is bringing it back for another season. I must say, FX has been good about supporting some excellent shows lately. And that reminds me, the season premiere of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is on tonight! :)

I too love this show, but it's not even close to best of the year. Right now that would go to "Breaking Bad", but with the next season of "Dexter" starting any day now, and the "The Walking Dead" series starting on Halloween, I don't think it will stand a chance.

I've started watching this today. I have always liked Louis C.K., but I didn't think he could work as a TV show, which naturally had to take away more than a few edges of his stand-up programme.
But I agree, it is very clever and funny in an awkward kind of way, but there is something about its surreal nature that is very cleverly executed. It is also quite an accomplishment making something equal parts funny and depressing.

I wouldn't call it the best show of 2010 simply because it is extremely niche and actually very hard to recommend, but I have found myself watching the first five episodes in a row today, which doesn't happen very often.

Iam very much looking forward to more. Unfortunatly all the clips and promos you can find online either focus on the gross, vulgar parts or the "awkward relationship" moments.

Well, when I said "best show of 2010" I really meant Best Original Show of 2010. Breaking Bad is definitely up there, and I probably like it a LITTLE bit more.

Regardless, it was just my opinion, and even if it doesn't turn out to be the best, it was still an excellent, excellent show, and certainly a unique one

Fucking brilliant show. Love it.

How is it doing ratings-wise? If Louie gets cancelled, I'ma go on a stabbing spree.

Also: Lucky Louie was great.

Also, also: I heart lil' Jimmy Norton.

I understand, but I'm just saying, that as much as I like the show it just can't compete with the fingernail chewing cliff hangers that those other shows have left me with. I have never watched an episode of Louie and been so physically excited to see what happens next that I start flailing around in frustration because I would have to wait an entire week to find out. I still really enjoy it, just not as much as the other shows. It doesn't mean Louie is any less of a show, just different.

Eh, the show has dived into a deep trench of depressing and awkward for the second half of the first season. I liked the opening mood more.

It already got renewed for a second season. FX likes the show because of a combination of it getting surprisingly good ratings and also being dirt cheap to produce.

Sorry, but I really don't like Sons of Anarchy (and even if I did, it's still not a show that's new to 2010). I find the writing really weird and inconsistent. Occasionally it has some interesting elements, but then they're ruined by other moments that seem like they were written and directed by a 2 year old. The show also in my mind tries too hard to be The Sopranos. It's okay I guess, I can see why people like it, but it definitely wouldn't make my best of list.

Also never heard of East Bound and Down.

I only caught one episodes, was pretty funny - incredibly crass and vulgar, which is not a complaint, in fact more cable networks need to start doing this, there's no reason to censor your network if you're not on broadcast.

FX has a shockingly good track record with original shows - Sons of Anarchy looked really pretty bad, and it was great. Likewise for Justified (which I really hope comes back, I love Elmore Leonard's writing style.) Happy to hear Louie got greenlit for a Season 2, I'll have to make more of an effort to watch it.
