@shaunk: Back in the day LOTS of games required you to read the manual for controls. It was pretty common for some PC games to have massive ring bound tomes. It was simpler time.
Saying that it's still a stupid mechanic to have 3 different ways to look at things!
Some games are important, I get that, it doesn't mean they will remain flawless in history. For instance Heavy Rain made a huge impact on me when it was released, it doesn't mean it is still as good now. Jeff mentioned on the bombcast he went back and played the first quake game recently and was shocked at how it hadn't held up as much as he had thought. Sadly it appears the same has happened to Shenmue. If you hold a fondness for it, that's great, sadly in the context of 2016, without those rose tinted lenses it has just been surpassed by games that built on the ideas that it created, and that's ok.
Game design has evolved greatly since 1999, but even so you can't say that having 3 separate ways to interact with things was intuitive, even for the time. I am with the other rational commentators, I don't come to Giant Bomb for Mad Shenmue Proskillz Tipz, I come here to be entertained. The fact they spent nearly an hour looking for a key that was hidden behind obtrusive or dated gameplay mechanics is amusing. The Beast Crew are doing a great job at bringing this game to those of us who haven't played it before in a way that is entertaining. If you think they are playing it wrong and it bothers you that much. Stop watching.
Tolstoï's War and Peace covers, in four parts, the many Russian dynasties of the period, the invasion of Russia by Napoleon and a reflexion on the concept of history itself. Dostoïevski's The Idiot, again in four parts, analyses the place of innocence and good nature in an aristocracy that rejects both. Balzac, through his entire Comédie humaine, constructs an full and precise portrait of life in France in the XIXe century and its inhabitants.
The other games were perfection, the balance of each maze felt like you could achieve a perfect run, if you played well enough and the timing was always on a knife edge.
