My Favorite Games of the Decade

List items

  • It was the first time I preordered a game to make sure I had it, and the first one I continued to follow throughout the preview/review cycle. Sure, there's no platforming or exploration like the first one, but it still lived up to the ungodly amounts of hype that I had for it - the most hype I've ever had for a game in my whole life.

  • There's something to be said for a game that pretty much formed the group that I play games with to this day. At that time, I didn't care about competitive multiplayer at all, so an all co-op game was definitely something I wanted to play. And our group of friends did play it well into the next year until we'd gotten nearly every crazy achievement in that game, and we enjoyed every minute of it.

  • I still haven't played a JRPG where I've enjoyed the combat as much as this one. As unbalanced as it is, I love making gigantic combos, grinding up to level 255, creating the strongest weapons, and beating these ridiculously strong bosses on whatever stupid difficulty mode they throw at me.

  • I don't care about how nonsensical and stupid it is, I loved the story and characters of this game when it came out. All these overcomplicated Final Fantasies with their grandiose storytelling influenced my creative writing in countless ways. I have whole stories I wrote when this game came out that star characters who are basically the heroes of this game.

  • I look back on this game and wonder how they did it. In every way, it's not only better than the first, but better than any other shooter single player campaign. Even just technically - how does it not load and still look better than any console game? How did they take a series where I hated the first game and then put the second game in my GOTY top spot and number five for the whole decade?

  • I hate that I have to put it on here, because I don't like it for any reason any other game is on this list. I think the single player campaign is mostly terrible and the spec-ops cooperative campaign is extremely lazy, but I'll be damned if I haven't played the multiplayer more than any other game, probably ever. It's still the only game where I will go matchmaking on my own, without friends.

  • I don't remember what happened in this game, but whatever it was, it was FUCKING AWESOME.

  • Still the best action game out there, even after I play Bayonetta and God of War 3.

  • The framerate might be terrible, but I feel so sad after I kill one of those Colossi. :(

  • The aesthetic is bizarrely refreshing and the combat is fast. And JOB SYSTEM!

  • It couldn't have delivered on the hype more for me, mostly because of the story and characters. It is Half-Life, after all.

  • I hate cars, but this game is amazing.

  • It had to be on here somewhere.

  • I didn't really like the characters, world, or aesthetic, but there is a shitload of stuff that I loved doing in this game.

  • Charming world, characters, and aesthetic. I bought it sight unseen and generally dislike stealth campaigns, but still loved this one, sticking points and all.

  • Wonderfully weird with some epic awesome music.

  • Still the only Zelda game I actually enjoy.

  • Another game that influenced my imagination more than anything else. The game itself kind of shit on the canon, but the music was incredible, and I loved it just because of the Chrono.

  • So ridiculous in its depth. I came to it late, when I wasn't so much into the length of JRPGs any more. If it was around in the late nineties/early 2000s, though, it would have been all I played for a whole year.

  • A wonderful update to one of my favorite games of all time.
