Favorite Games of the 2020s (so far)

  • The best Bioware style RPG since Mass Effect 2. Possibly the best ever.

  • Bethesda style RPG set in a Gibsonian pastiche is absolutely my shit. It's very corny at times and absolutely barren of the cyberpunk genre's thematic concerns beyond aesthetics, but I enjoyed the characters, gameplay, and environments in a way I haven't in this style of game since Skyrim. Note: I waited until the Xbox Series S release to play it and found a lot of the technical criticisms of the initial release to be a nonissue. I've also gone back since Phantom Liberty and the new upgrade trees seem really awesome.

  • Probably the best story in a game I've played so far this decade. Incredibly unique. I still can't stop thinking about it.

  • The story doesn't all the way stick the landing for me, but the ride is second to none. Far superior than the original Alan Wake on almost every conceivable metric. I think this ranks a close third as Remedy's best after Control and Max Payne 2.

  • I never played the original RE4, but the remake is incredible. The tension and intensity of the combat is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Perfect balance of challenge and fun. Gold standard for high action/horror (while RE2 Remake is the standard for more classic survival horror).

  • I bounced off the original Dead Space but this remake was absolutely enthralling. A close runner up to RE4 Remake in the action/horror genre.

  • This is not usually my type of game, but it had enough adventure game style trappings, not to mention the setting and characters, to really grab me. I'm really excited to see what they do with a fully voiced sequel.

  • TLoU Part 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. It has one of the most tightly executed stories in almost any medium. Part 2's story is very messy by comparison, but you can't say it's not at least going for something with everything it's got. The gameplay intensity is also a markable step up from the original and I still think there's enough meat on the story bone not to discount it.

  • Village is a worthy follow up to the incredible RE7 with all the same great gameplay, atmosphere, and RE trappings that I love. It also has one of the most terrifying sequences I've ever played in a game.

  • The first LiS is another one of my favorite games. True Colors feels like more of a spiritual successor than LiS 2 did with more mature characters and themes. It doesn't have the grand scope of the original game, but I think it handles it's story perfectly.

  • It can't be the revelation the 2016 Hitman was, but it's still the best in the new Hitman trilogy.

  • Maybe the best martial arts has ever been portrayed in video game form. The game's initial difficulty was definitely a knock against it and I haven't gone back since they rebalanced things, so I do need to revisit it.
