The dilemma of an European (soon to be) retro game collector

It is a fact that we often hear American sites complaint about games using a long time from coming from Japan over to USA. Be it the Virtual console on Wii, PlayStation Store or retail game. Well, it is also a fact that we Europeans only dream about having the same selection of games as our brothers on the other side of the Atlantic. But it is getting better. We can make American PSN- and LIVE-accounts, and the internet have made it much easier to to import games (and thank good for those companise that did not region lock their system!).

Well, all this is good, but it is still the dilemma of retro games. They were all (as far as I know) region locked, and Europe was much less fortunate back then. Did you all know Europe didn't see Dragons Quest (or Warrior) before Dragon Quest VIII in 2006? We didn't get Final Fantasy (number one) before 2008. There are even whole systems that did never see the light of day over here.

So, should I just buy the American versions of gaming consoles and get the games for them? I already got the European version of NES and SNES, but not really a lot of games. Should I just go for the American Atari 2600 and not even bother with the European version? Not even sure yet what I am gonna buy next, but the Atari 2600 is high on my list since I have plans about writing a master's degree paper about the video game crash in 1983.
