Recollections of Diablo

The sound that it makes after the installation process is fucking scary!
The sound that it makes after the installation process is fucking scary!

With the release of Diablo III last week, I wasn’t fortunate enough to purchase this game via opening day and did not have the computer to even run the game. It’s such a shame that I cant be able to get back to Diablo though I hadn’t played that much of the previous Diablo games either. Although, from what I remember I did beat the first Diablo but did not finish Diablo II and its expansion, only appearing to stop playing at the opening of Act 4 and found that it’s not that exciting anymore. I mean, I had much of my childhood with the first Diablo and remembering the Butcher, the first boss you face in that game was quite a traumatic memory to me in the way that I barely get that much sleep back then due to it. I think I played the warrior back then but still had some time to play the rogue and the wizard.

It was the late 90s, 99’ I think that I remember playing the first Diablo and playing on Windows 95 or something was a blast, it was quite a click-fest. I remember clicking the shit out of my mouse like APMs which I think the whole series is subjugated and I often playing Diablo due to playing “Heartbreaker” by Mariah Carey everytime I played the game which is odd, although the number of times I heard those annoying foot-steps was often accompanied with that song, well and I did not regret any moment of turning that song on my CD player while I play the game. You would think that I would add some metal into playing the game since the game has the devil in it. The music in the game always bored when despite having that slow tone to it and this is one of the reasons why I was really bored playing Diablo II, it’s that same score that did not really entices me to even play the game.

Dude that's really creepy!

Anyways, the moment that I encounter the Butcher, I was fucking scared; the fact that you had been raiding the catacombs, level by level killing skeletons and shit and then encountering a room full of blood and dead bodies scares the shit out of me. It was one of my traumatic moments next to Chucky as well as Eternal Darkness, later on my life, I did not like to remember how it killed me the first time, even though I was freaking out when I fought him. Even the essence of that Mariah Carey song did not redeem any qualities of me being scared despite that song being creepy. Regardless my time with the first Diablo game was memorable not only because of finding a song that oddly doesn’t fit in the game rather than playing it on CD player every time I play the damn game.

DUDE THAT REALLY CREEPY!!!

I also remember how Act II in Diablo II was traumatic to me because of my fear of maggots back then, the sound that they use for those things scares the shit out of me and I did not quickly lost my appetite after playing that part of the game especially when you get into their lair. What really creeps me out is the Maggot Queen and how it dies – it just vomits green puke and makes this scary ass sound while you pick up good loot that it shits out. That part of the game really makes me not play the game entirely, I had nightmares because of that. Also the ones that return in other Acts are in different colours which is extremely creepy and disgusting especially the ones in Act 4.

Being online destroys the game to me.

Aside from that, I had so much fun playing the first Diablo and find that in my experience that I did not have fun playing multiplayer despite that this game also has online-play. Now, I’m a single-player guy, I rarely play online because it hinders much of the universe that I am attached in. Sure, both Diablo games could set up private games for you and your friends to play but I want to meticulously dig into the lore and also get the opportunity to play the damn game; from searching every chest and kill every enemy in the game. Granted, playing with your friends could get better loot and able to grind my levels faster rather grinding for hours. Although this really discourages me from playing Diablo II, the fact that it’s more of a multiplayer game like Diablo III – my experience playing with friends wasn’t that great with this game, they often rush to finish the quest and sometimes there are times that I loathe the fact that they are higher level than me, plus it’s their game thus those earlier quests are completed already. Even if they are leveling at the same rate or same level as I am, I don’t feel the game has a point although, I find that playing the single-player portion of the game to be rather boring to me. The fact that you also have mercenaries to help you, I get rarely distracted due to being a huge completionist and often try to search everywhere for chests and unique creeps to kill and that really takes me out of it personally for playing the game.

I do not really have recollections of Diablo II much less of its expansion either, I find that even with added cutscenes and the lore is more enticing with the gameplay I did not get any moment that I feel I could remember than the first Diablo. Now with that game, there isn’t really lore to keep up too, you just jump into the game and you don’t really get into the lore until later on. I did not remember there being any quests at all either, all I remember is repeatedly finding the stairs, The Butcher and how to duplicate items and shit, also the injured dude in front of the Cathedral and Deckard Cain.

Other than that, both games had some recollections in my childhood back then and I do not have that much fun playing these games than other Blizzard games especially Starcraft. With Diablo III released, I find their implementation of battle.net much due to evading piracy to be a lack of a single-player experience isn’t fun either.
