The Sad Story of Emmeline Burn

This is a short Yuri Visual Novel done by Ebi-Hime who did Asphyxia (one of my favorite games I played last year) and is actually kind of sad. Similar to Asphyxia, it has real life aspects that teach the reader about themselves and connections to the characters of the VN. The sad fate of what happens to the characters and what suffering they went through can help readers realize new ways to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. Well worth the read and it is FREE.

Orion: A Sci-Fi Visual Novel

A short Sci-Fi adventure dealing with Space/Time Travel with some decent Artwork and Music. The story is mediocre but I only partially enjoyed it. I did not go for all the endings and since you have to get all endings to get the true ending, I probably will not ever see the ending. The artwork for the stationary images are very well done and help set some of the scenes. The music is also decent with a few catchy songs that I actually enjoyed. Both the art and music are the only thing that probably kept me going through the story. I do not know if I would recommend, but it is not terrible either.

Last Days of Spring Visual Novel

A short last week of high school story about trying to figure out what to do with your future and maybe forming a love interest at the end of the whole event. The story is average with some interesting moments, but not very life changing. The music and art are fair for what the story is trying to tell, but nothing really jumped out to me.

Broken Dreams

A short puzzle/platformer that follows a young lover in search of his one love (with a sad ending). The game mechanic is pretty cool and is actually enjoyable to use when it does not bug off. This was not a bad game, but had some issues. Plus it is apparently similar to other games I have never played or even heard about.

Cally's Trials

Not as good as Cally's Caves 3, but adds some changes that make the game decent. I would still recommend Cally's Caves 3 over this, but if you want to see some of the origin story of the game and the characters, then it would not hurt.

Storm of Spears

A slightly buggy, yet decent RPG about overcoming the tyranny of a kingdom. The minor bugs are not to problematic, but some of the combat stuff is a little off. Being able to paralyze almost every (if not every) boss, making the fights pretty much useless and easy. The spell stuff is decent, but does less damage than just attacking. Not really organized as a class based RPG. The story and music are also decent and I did enjoy playing the game. It just may not appeal to everyone.

List items

  • I really enjoyed Narcissu and this game, done by the same creator, brings a slightly lighter touch to the sad genera of life's misfortunes. The story is based on Mizu no Marginal light novel and is more a prequel to that story and helps set up the beginning to the series. The sad story comes to a happy ending and makes the Visual Novel worth the read.

  • The second installment in the Dark Witch game series. More improvements and game play added to make for an even more enjoyable experience than the previous version. The game is very addicting to me and I keep coming back to it and trying different styles of game play. Another fun 3DS game.

  • A Very sweet Yuri Visual Novel about how two girls struggled through their emotions and daily lives in order to become best of friends/lovers. There are not many Yuri novels out there (more are coming out, but not in bulk) and I really enjoy these kinds of stories. It gives me hope that I will one day also be able to find my significant other. :)

  • A very sad and beautiful story about self identification that brings out the best and worst in people. The game is very well done and has some great visuals, music, and VA. For a game inspired and mostly done by one individual, this is one of the greatest games that needs to be played during the new millennium era. More than likely will make my top ten games this year :).

  • A very pleasant and sad short story about helping out an injured bird overcome the path to flight. It had some sad moments, but was a very good well done story.

  • A complex week by week simulator Visual Novel that puts you in the role of an up and coming queen. These choose your classes/skills/learning simulators seem to not have a fond memory with me and tend to be a little more work and not as fun as they would seem. The story would be fairly good if there were choice paths that were simpler than choosing what classes to take that may end up leading to many attempts of failure. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it were a little simpler and had fewer failure events.

  • Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt. A short, rpg/bullet hell shooter game where you go around and heal people from their pains and miseries. It is free and is not terrible. Just a short basic game.

  • A very cute and wonderful game about exploring different ideas from history and learning the truth about what actually happened through the surrounding objects in the world. The music is really nice and pleasant to listen to while you solve minor puzzles that will make you think you are stupid for not thinking the easy solution first. The first level was a little laggy and buggy and caused some problems (apparently others have similar issues) but once you get going into other levels, it actually starts running smoother and is a lot more fun. Definitely worth trying and enjoying this short game.

  • Hyper Drive Edition on Wii U. I really enjoyed Mighty Flip Champions on the PS3 so I thought I would enjoy this and the 2nd one. At first I was having problems with it, but I ended up working with the game and partially enjoying it. I did not really like it when games force you to Par time on stages in order to advance through the game. I did manage to actually par some stages in order to unlock the rest of the game and even unlock the Hyper Stages. Yet, I just can not enjoy it as much as Mighty Flip Champions :(.

  • It is nice seeing a female rescuing the male in a game. Granted the game is a little sexist with its mechanics and such. Yet, the game is not completely terrible and had some interesting puzzles and ideas set into the game. The mechanics may have been a bit sexist but actually help the character solve puzzles and work through the game. I definitely enjoyed it and still play it here and there.

  • Both. You get to go to SPACE and fight a legendary Pokemon. What more can you want? Still a great series that is getting better with time. I am even thinking of doing some expert EV training. Will be a contender for my top games played this year.

  • (PS3) A very enjoyable RPG about finding ones self and working with those you encounter to become stronger. It has some really enjoyable gameplay mechanics and has a very well done story. This is well worth playing for RPG fans and people who like the art style.

  • I do not know if I can technically call it finished since I am not very good and can not unlock all the levels. But I did do a large number of them including some gold key doors, so I feel I accomplished something in the game. This is kind of a speedrun-ish game where you clean up trash as fast as possible and without losing your combo. It is actually pretty fun and the music is really enjoyable. It can get hard with the jumps, maneuvers and tight controls, but it is not terrible even if you just want to repeat certain levels or beat your friends scores.

  • I technically beat the main story and the Dragonborn DLC. I am stll cleaning up some minor stuff and the Dawnguard DLC. I still consider the game beaten and am putting it on this list. I originally did not think I would enjoy this game and when it came out I was busy with College so I had other things to focus on. I did end up enjoying a large majority of the game and believe it is one of the best open world games I have played. I did have some issues which messed with my enjoyment, but they were not super problematic the the point that I did not want to play anymore. I will like to try this when I get a better computer to see how things improve.

  • HD version on the PS3. This was a game I had seen and thought it would be interesting to try and play if I ever found a copy at a good price. This is probably one of the best arts/visuals I have seen in a game in a long time and the music is also very well done with a Japanese style vibe. The game play is very well done as well and I greatly enjoyed getting the platinum in this game. Well worth a playthrough.

  • A short enjoyable game with some features from Metroid/Castlevania that add to the story and game play. I have the first one on my PC, but it is not working so and I got this one for the WII U so I may get the first one on that as well. Still a decent game.

  • Not as hard as the Anime version, lacking in music, with mostly ambient sounds, so you will need your own soundtrack. The puzzle glitch still works making it easier to solve the bigger puzzles.

  • Very fun and enjoyable platformer with some strategic flavors added to make the game easier or more enjoyable. Though achievement hunters may want to read achievements before playing so they do not grind so much. Otherwise I had a lot of fun and will play it some more.

  • This is a fairly decent and short game with cutesy aspects to it. I did enjoy my first run of the game and then when I tried for achievements, I found it not as enjoyable. I will just go by first impressions and say that it was fun to play and I had a good time playing through the story.

  • A relaxing, physics based, story driven game that is very well done and has great graphics and music. The story can be slightly out of tune if you do not do most of the game in a certain order and can be a problem for those interested in it. Yet, it is still comprehensive and very well done. A game worth trying out.

  • I can not say many good things about this game. It was not the best I've tried to play and I only kept going to get the achievements.

  • Birthright/Revelations. A very well done Strategy RPG, with a story that is very complex and well worth playing. A great 3DS game to play around if you are interested in Fire Emblem games or SRPGs. The soundtrack, graphics and gameplay also make the story emotional and entertaining. Will definitely be on my game of year list.

  • Short (kind of too short) Yuri-esque game involving a girl and her imagination. Still decently enjoyable and not hard/long to go through in a few hours.

  • A fairly decent old school style RPG with an interesting rock-paper-scissors combat mechanic. The dungeon crawling aspects combined with a slightly linear floor plan make exploring for new weapons, armor and items a big part of the game. This is definitely a game to give a try if you like old school RPG game. The music and art is also fairly decent and each floor has it's own theme that works very well with the game play.

  • The Dusk Series has been my first intro to the Atelier series and I have enjoyed pretty much all of it. The challenges, style, music, art has all been very decadent and special. The ending to this series helped to round out the whole series and made for a great understanding of the games world. The time system is one that ruins peoples interest in the series and if you do mind missing some of the background story then this game will work fairly well. You can explore as much without time destroying your fun. This is definitely well worth trying out if you like these kinds of games and slightly simpler JRPGs.
