Best of 2011

I didn't play Bastion until shortly after the new year!! Aw man! Anyways nobody cares but here's my top 10 for 2011. Great year for games, for sure.

List items

  • Dark Souls brings back awesome memories of muddling my way through some of the classic games of my youth. The collaborative effort of deciphering Dark Souls' obscureness alongside the rest of the internet made me feel like when I was a kid, trading videogame secrets with other kids on the playground. The tons of exploration, hidden stuff (illusory walls!), and places and ways to die kept my mind fixated on this game for months. I'm still in it! Help me!

  • For my money, this is the best Bethesda game yet. Finally the combat feels "alright" instead of "crappy", the NPCs are more varied and less annoying (arrows in knees notwithstanding), and the various major storylines are all of a fairly high level of quality. It's just too bad that the vision sometimes outreaches the technology. Still, it's a very immersive, well-realized world.

  • Amazing writing. Amazing puzzles. Amazingly designed, through and through. If I never see another Portal game I'll be perfectly happy, because how can they make another one better than this?

  • The sheer God damn carnage and ridiculousness that is presented to the player, simply as a matter of course, is so far off the scales that I can't help but appreciate it on that basic level. Add in some sharp writing and acting and fun, crazy missions and I'm fully sold.

  • Never did kill Dredmor. But I got pretty close a few times, and that's good enough for me. I will probably never finish a roguelike.

  • TrackMania brings out the best in people. "The best" having the meaning of "spinning donuts on the finish line" of course. This game is good old crazy arcade wacky funtimes. And that bass throws for BLOCKS.

  • There's some problems with the game mechanics for sure (such as how the questioning works) but all in all, the game is a technical marvel in several ways. Not to mention it's a crazy feat to get the GTA crowd to buy what is basically an investigative adventure game with a surprisingly good story. Play in black and white with the contrast turned up a little. I recommend it.

  • This isn't really the kind of game I usually play but man. Most video games are really dumb. Like really, really, super dumb. This game knows it's super dumb and runs with it in the best possible way, from the dumb script and the dumb characters to the dumb kill moves to the dumb enemies.
