Best Games I've Played in 2013

These are games I played to completion during the year of 2013 that I enjoyed the most. This does not mean the games necessarily came out in 2013. I just need to have played the game for the first time for it to qualify. These are in no particular order, nor do I wish for them to be.

List items

  • The surprising amount of subtlety taken in describing the effects of the personal events in the characters' lives kept me going through the entire game. The gameplay mechanics were also very inviting to me. I wish more point-and-click adventure games relied less on creating absurd puzzles and focused more time on getting the players into the meat of the game, which is the story - a thing this game did extremely well.

  • Despite the sense of repeated elements from the original and possibly some of the worst dialogue spoken in a game at times, the game still featured a lot of good ol' shlootin'.

  • The amazing music and characteristic and exaggerated art style elevated this game about a dull plot involving a revenge-seeking chicken-turned-revolutionary-hero into a series of experiences I loved throughout.

Also, you can roll on the floor for days!

  • Not much I can say can elevate this game any more than the millions of other voices have done within the past year. It's still a masterpiece in terms of storytelling for games, and I still felt attached to the characters... Well, almost all of them.

(Yeah, I'm looking at you, Ms. Backstabber and Mr. Useless)

  • The length was just about right for this game. Despite the different ways the scenarios and environments changed through the game, I didn't want to shoot any more of the Shadows (?) than I needed to. The story was a bit of a letdown in terms of moving the story of Alan Wake forward, but those cheesy FMV videos made the journey through this game worth it.

  • Batman. Batman. Batman.

  • Batman. Batman. Batman. Redux

  • This game was dumb in some of the best ways. Knee-sliding a guy to death is a pretty funny way to kill a guy.

Speaking of dumb stuff and knee-sliding guys to death...

  • ...This game is all of that and a whole lot more. The lack of subtlety and amount of bombastic nonsense in the game made me wish more shooters would go down this route rather than clamoring for the CoD seat of superiority. I have nothing against CoD; I just wish more games had variety such as this game.

Also, this game has the best shotgun in a game. Period.

  • This game is a lesser game than its predecessor due to its story and its odd treatment of legendary weapons/items. Why have a loot-based game with items you can only remove from your inventory by selling them off? I want to ask the developers about this decision, but after the THQ shutdown this year I'm not sure where the developers went.

This game is better than its original due to its combat system. I love the change to a more (for lack of a better term) DMC-based combat system. It got me coming back for more in the game even after the annoying experiences I had when playing the game on Apocalyptic mode.

  • The universe was extremely charming, and the short gameplay time allowed me to enjoy the exciting parts of the game faster than a 20-hour game does. I'll explain that by saying this: I beat this game twice without realizing it, and I loved the experience just as much both times.
