  1. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

  One of the best crossovers ever, with the MK heroes I enjoyed from MKII combined with a set of REAL superheroes. Marvel vs. Capcom, eat your heart out.

  My Game of the Year, 2008. There aren't many games that capture the post-apocalyptic feel that well, since the genre kind of went out of style when the Soviet Union collapsed, although it seems to be resurfacing with the recent anxieties about the economy, the environment, and terrorism. The last good doomsday I saw in a game was in Final Fantasy VI.

  A great story, well-realized environment, lots of quests with multiple creative solutions, make this game a role-player's delight. It has flaws, to be sure, in the form of the odd bug and an occasionally unwieldy combat system, but I haven't had this much fun with an adventure game since Final Fantasy XII and Twilight Princess back in 2006.

  1. Tales of Vesperia

  The Japanese RPG is back with a vengeance. Wonderful, fluid cel-shaded graphics and animations give this the feel of a fully interactive Kosuke Fujishima anime, and the fighting engine is more action-packed than most action games. Excellent characters, including the conflicted protagonist, Yuri, who wants to do right, and follows his path, but isn't sure he's following the right path.
