Best of 2010

Satsugai: Best of 2010. So for reference I thought I'd list the games I played this year that came out in 2010 as a comparison.
Finished

  • Mass Effect 2
  • Yakuza 3
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • God of War III
  • Deadly Premonition
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
  • Bayonetta
  • Dead Rising 2: Case Zero
  • Alan Wake
  • Dead Rising 2
  • Costume Quest
  • Fallout: New Vegas
  • Fable III
  • Valkyria Chronicles II
  • Rock Band 3
  • Alpha Protocol
  • Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
  • Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Played through X-men (arcade) and the PS3 version of Castle Crashers as well, but both of those are both ostensibly old even though they came out this year.  You also don't really finish something like Beat Hazard of Civilization V.

Unfinished
Metro 2033 - Will finish eventually, but didn't really care for it. It's like Russian underground Bioshock, and I don't care for Bioshock.
Resonance of Fate - Working on it, but my compulsion to finish the arena is certainly slowing things down.

2010 games that I probably won't get to until 2011

Red Dead Redemption
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Heavy Rain
Vanquish
Darksiders

  • Liked it enough to play it twice. That's pretty high praise in my book. I felt the story was considerably weaker, but the game mechanics more than made up for any narrative short comings.

  • This game is crazy in a way I can get behind. I mean, 10 ft tall ladies with clothes made of hair that get more naked depending on how devastating their attacks are? Sign me up, man.

  • With the addition of the pro modes and keyboards, I don't think there's anything they can really add to this series with a disc. The challenges are entertaining and I've resigned myself to dropping the money on that damn squier already.

  • Even horribly chopped up, I still put 60 hours into this game and had a great time doing it. For some reason, this is about the only series I ever get emotionally invested into the characters.

  • Civ is one of those games where you constantly tell yourself, "one more turn!" and then 9 hours magically seem to have passed.

  • This game sunk its hidden blades in me and didn't let go until I had gotten my vengeance, well, that and collected a lot of flags. Making the combat more like Batman: Arkham Asylum and the new Brotherhood of Assassins you build up are nice touches. That ending, man. They certainly leave you wanting more, if only to figure out what the fuck just happened. It was also an interesting way to see how my own Italian had progressed since I now have a semester of it crammed in my head. Pleasantly surprised on how much I could understand now.

  • Hits all the checkmarks you'd generally want in a God of War game. It seemed really easy in comparison, but it's been a while since I've played the first two. Getting to finish the gods off in pretty savage ways was satisfying, though I'm surprised there was no 'fuck Aphrodite to death' option.

  • My DS game of the year, at least by virtue of it being the only DS game I played this year that was released in 2010. I could've done with less dark areas and teleporting tiles, but other than that, the dungeon crawling was solid. I do have a really hard time not sticking to the neutral path though since law/chaos seems so heavy handed to me.

  • An interesting flip-flop happened to me for New Vegas where I thought the main quest was really well done, while most of the sidequests were fairly uninteresting as compared to Fallout 3, which was decidedly the opposite. I also liked that you actually had to build characters in specific ways in order to be effective as opposed to being able to max out all skills. Oh yeah, and barter checks.

  • Yo, you want to sneak around and throw dudes into walls to knock them out cqc style on a portable? Then brother do I have a game for you! The monster hunter bosses are pretty weird, but they made collecting guys for your army way easier than it was in Portable Ops. I also love the art style during the motion comic/qte segments.
