My Favorite Scifi Games

One thing I will express about myself to anyone I meet is my love for Science Fiction. I love the idea of space exploration. I love the idea of technology we might have in the future. I grew up watching shows like Star Trek and Stargate and was absolutely intrigued by them. I aspire to one day write a scifi piece of my own, and thus have committed myself to develop a knowledge for everything scifi.

I thought I may as well make a list of my favorite science fiction games up to this point.

List items

  • Let's get this out of the way. You can't make a scifi list relating to video games without mentioning the Mass Effect franchise. The story may not have had the best conclusion in video game history (I liked the ending but its not a very popular opinion), but one can not question the sheer amount of detail Bioware put into the universe and lore surrounding Mass Effect. The amount of detail put into the games "Codex" trumps literally any other scifi game universe ever created, and can even compete with scifi giants on television such as Stargate and Star Wars.

  • Half-Life as a whole, holds a very special place in my heart. It was one of the franchises I grew up playing. I remember when I first put in the first game and being absolutely absorbed in the setting that was Black Mesa. It was both horrifying and intriguing to me at the young age I was at.

The continuation, Half-Life 2, expanded upon the story that the first one vaguely put forth. Now taking place in a dystopia about two decades after the first, this one had a very distinct feel that separated it from the first.

Valve put forth a very intriguing way of telling their story with the Half-Life games, forcing the player to pay attention to there surroundings and sort of come up with their own conclusions to what may or may not be going on.

  • I have loved the Unreal Tournament franchise ever since 1999. It was the first online game I played competitively and I love it to this day. However, no entry in the Unreal TOURNAMENT franchise will make this list.

The original Unreal does. It put you in a world that was so well crafted. Reading all of the logs and writings of the aliens literally crafted a PLACE that you wanted to know more about as you made your way through the game. I have been continually surprised that Epic has not returned to the very interesting world of Na Pali
