Finding solace in video games

Being shut in for these past nine months has been awful, but video games have been somewhat of a solace.

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - I bought this game because a friend was interesting in playing it, but Patricia took a real liking to it. This has been the go-to game for the two of us. It's been great that we can "play house" while our real house is a mess, and just relax and spend time together.
  • Dota 2 - This was the first time that I bought a Battle Pass. It ended up being something that I really needed - I found Dota-playing friends and joined a guild, and feel like I actually got to the point where I was a competent player. I haven't played in the past four months, but I still want to play. The time commitment of 45 min - 1 hr per game can be quite a lot, though.
  • Tabletop Simulator - Since my gaming group couldn't meet in person, this has become a great way to continue with my board gaming hobby. We also used to play a lot of board games as a family, and with our daughter across the country, this has been another way to keep in touch.
  • Among Us - This was a lot of fun to play with cousins in Canada that we haven't been able to see. We were supposed to visit for a wedding, but those plans have been postponed. Still, it was a great way to catch up with everyone, and even share some good news!
  • StarCraft II - Because some friends wanted to start playing again, I loaded it on my system and started playing multiplayer again. I hadn't played seriously since The Heart of the Swarm came out, and I never finished the second two campaigns. I started watching WinterStarcraft's videos, and then switched to ROOT ViBE's bronze-to-GM videos. I actually made it to platinum Protoss, and Gold 1 for all races (including Random)
  • Indie games - There have been some great games coming out. I have been anxiously awaiting the release of Necrobarista, and it delivered a fun game with a touching story. Donut County was also a lovely gem. I heard about Carto on Twitter from Nick Suttner, and I like it so far. I was also surprised by the release of PixelJunk Eden 2 this week.
  • Steam backlog - Finally, I've been using this downtime to go through my Steam list of shame. I finally finished Psychonauts after eight years, and I loved this game. I haven't decided what to play next, but I have so many games to get to, and there are so many good games coming out. Right now, I'm trying to limit the number of games I am playing concurrently (maybe 1 per category) to try and get through them. I'm also less likely to 100% or achievement hunt right now - I think my time would be better spent on something new.
