The Art of Getting Attention – The Arcade Cabinet Marquee

I was surfing the web the other day and came across a site that specialized in arcade marquees. What’s an arcade marquee you ask? You know, that image on the arcade cabinet that’s directly above the monitor. It was the image you would look for in an arcade when the side image of a cabinet was not visible and/or when a crowd was gathered around a machine and you couldn’t see the monitor to figure out what game it was.
After searching a few other websites and looking at eBay, I’ve noticed that the marquee, in my own opinion, is kind of an important piece of art that’s both great to look at and is also functional. It’s something that’s above the head of most people and is used to help grab your attention as you pass by it. It sometimes shows what the game is about. For example, if the cabinet is a Strikers 1945 game, then you’ll see an image of some planes on it. If it’s a fighting game, it’ll usually give some indication that fighting is involved. Characters of the game are sometimes also displayed on the marquee. Below are some images of a few marquees.
Arcade cabinet marquees, I guess you can relate it to as being the cherry-on-top when it comes to decorating an arcade cabinet. What do you think about them?
