Revival: Reloaded X2 Reboot Edition and a lot of talk about RTS

I live, again! (Blood reference, yay!) I haven't used my Bomb-profile for a long, long time now and I got this crazy idea of logging in again and checking out what is going on and like I guessed, not much has happened if you exclude my twitter account updating my profile automatically. I didn't even remember I had linked my GB-account with my twitter but it seems I did. Truth to be told, I didn't even remember there was a feature like that at all. That says something about how long it has been since last time I logged in. That doesn't mean I haven't been using the site itself oh no. I listen to every Bombcast and watch Quick Looks about games that interest me the most and that usually means all of them because I'm quite interested in the video game-business in whole.

I haven't written that much reviews lately because of really bad excuses but I still have my controversial opinions somewhere inside my head so I probably could dig something out in "you can read this"-form. Like what I think about R.U.S.E. You guys don't probably even remember that strange RTS-game from Ubisoft. From the past of 2010? Yeah, that game. THE RTS Game of the Year 2010 in my opinion, Supreme Commander 2 coming in very close, earning that second place. Oh what now? I have some kind of mental illness because it's not StarCraft II? Yeah probably, but I don't really care, I like my mental illness.

StarCraft II was a great game and I believe Blizzard can't make bad games but was it the best of 2010 in every way possible? Hell no. In my opinion, R.U.S.E probably is. It did something different and that is the biggest positive thing I can say about any game. The graphical style and feel of the game is impressive, going with the strategical planning table/board game-look that really hasn't been done before in a similar way. The pacing of the game is much more friendlier than StarCraft II's when you compare the multiplayer side of things and even if it's the old and "boring" WW2-setting, the game still tries to do something slightly different by adding French and Italy as playable nations. I think even the graphics and sound-work on this game is better than StarCraft's, maybe R.U.S.E doesn't look so good in the far future compared to StarCraft II's non-realistic style but it looks awesome right now and that's what counts to me. Oh and after using the zoom-feature of R.U.S.E and Supreme Commander 2? No going back.

And talking about Supreme Commander 2, I think even that is slightly better than StarCraft 2. Why? I can give a quick summary. Jeremy Soule's music. Huge optimizations in performance compared to the first game. Bold minimalistic graphical style and redesign of numerous gameplay elements and one of the most customizable AI's I have seen in a while. It's different compared to the first game and it's different compared to many other games and that's what I wan't about sequels and new games in general.

And when you then compare these games to StarCraft II and then compare that game to first StarCraft, it just makes you think about things. StarCraft II had a great campaign mode that I enjoyed in every way but... It's StarCraft. It's the 1998 RTS Game of the Year. It's the same game in it's core. Sure it looks and sounds better and yeah, most of the other technical things are very much 2010 but it still feels like the same game. I know most of the anti-StarCraft trolls yell the same thing but I LOVE STARCRAFT and I still can't help but keep saying to myself it's the exact same game with everything just made a little better and what's worse is that I really can't say how it could be better or what they should have done differently. Maybe StarCraft is now in it's ultimate form but I just played so much of the first one that I was kinda bored of the second one even before it was released.

But that's enough of my ramblings for now, I hope I can start some kind of conversation out of this because I'm really bored out of my skull right now, damn you New Vegas and your game stopping bugs!
