GOTY 2017
Yep, Persona 5 and Mario Odyssey are missing due to me not having the platforms (I borrowed my friend's Wii U for BOTW).

From its opening moments to the credits, NieR packs in a whole lot of bombast and ethos. I enjoyed every moment I spent with this game, even when I drank of the pain of its characters. The themes have been trodden out time and time again, but the way NieR: Automata details and interacts with them makes this game a true labor of love.
I moved this year, and with limited Internet access, I needed a game to play to help me settle into the new digs. Dead Cells represents the true possibilities of early access, and it's a ride I'm so happy to have taken. The core of the game and its movement has always felt fantastic, but this garners its GOTY status by the commitment the developers have shown to iterating. Five times since May, they've offered a cornucopia of new content that recontextualizes the game. I keep coming back.
Listen, it's been a heavy year. SteamWorld Dig 2 presents a satisfying, easygoing gameplay loop and scouring its map for secret treasures and effective powerups was a simple joy.
ALthough it dwindles in its later portions, Capcom really nails this first-person take on the smooth Resident Evil gameplay. Shocks and gasps abound.
