GOTY 2021

List items

  • I sunk hundreds of hours into Slay the Spire this year, and it was refreshing to, at the end of the year, have something that pushes the boundaries of the collectible card gaming genre and is a cohesive experience. Every twist here is great, even if nothing quite lives up to the complexity of its initial offerings.

  • A competent shooter that shows off some of the PS5's capabilities. Some reveals and turns had a good impact the first time around, but I was doubtful that they would hold up on repeated runs.

It wasn't until well after I had beaten it, hunting down the last few of my trophies, that the consistency of the game's oppressive atmosphere dawned on me (ironically, while I was DMJing and one-shotting everything in Atropos' beautiful biomes). This game completely nails the feeling of player empowerment in the face of unbeatable challenges. I still have some of the music cues and levels etched in my brain. Not half bad.

  • On paper, Deathloop was everything I wanted out of a 2021 game. In practice, I found it to be the weakest of the Arkane titles. Thankfully, that still makes it pretty good.

  • Butter-smooth and well-designed, even though it may have the appearance of being too linear. A good return to form from the kings of the genre.

  • Compared to Metroid Dread, AV2 is scrappy and...completely different than its predecessor. Nevertheless, I genuinely enjoyed my time with 100%ing this game. Its approach to the powers you gain is narratively charged, and it's as good at being a Metroidvania as anything.

  • Listen, I sunk hundreds of hours into this game back in the day. D2R is a lovingly reconstructed effort here, and I loved leveling yet another character.
