Thoughts over time past.

I've been on a nostalgic kick for the last few days.  Trying to play all the classics I could get my hands on, watching videos of people playing games I would like to play but having to deal with just watching.  I played Super Mario World, Tecmo Bowl, and becoming equally frustrated today as I was back then while playing Punchout and Kid Icarus.  I even watched the entire play through of Super Mario Brothers 3 and Legend of Zelda: A link to the past.

I bring all this up because I got to thinking, while I was pining over my youthful years and all the good times I had with my favorite games, I can't help but feel like I came from a golden era.  If you look at the old NES, SNES, and Genesis days, those games still hold up pretty well.  They are still hard, and their graphics don't confuse you as to what you're looking at.  But after watching and playing a few old 3-D games, the same can't be said.  I played Golden Eye, like many others, but trying to play it today isn't like what it was back then.  When I played it for the first time the graphics were mind blowing, I had never seen anything like it but today with the ever constant rise in graphics it's hard to relive that moment again.  Where back then I was blown away, today I just get a head ache.  Will the gamers that first grew up in the era of early 3-D graphics grow up with the same nostalgia I feel for my 8 and 16 bit games?  Could someone like me who has never played Ocarina of Time, play it and still come out with the same level of fulfillment as someone who played it so many years ago?

My Nostalgia for old console games stops at the NES era and moves over to the DOS/Windows 32/95/98/2000...

Lot's of PC Japanese RPGs (More than likely by Falcon), Wizardry type of dungeon games, Heroes of Might and Magic, Diablo 1/2, Starcraft, And a lot of Quake 3 Arena.

I lived in Korea for most of my teen years, and actually saw Starcraft go from some popular PC Room game to an e-sport (Counter Strike and Rainbow 6 also had a e-sport stint but it's not so big anymore I don't think). Now that I think about it, it was a weird natural progression.

Anyways, I totally miss the Falcon games I played back then. Legend of Heroes 3 wasn't much of a game but charming, and LOH5  wrapped it up really nicely(Nobody mention LOH4, that sucked and is also skippable). I forget which Ys games I played but damn they were pretty sweet.

I was saddened to hear the PSP ports of the games were buggy, had bad translation, and the additions didn't work out. Too bad cause I'd totally buy em again. (LOH I mean, the Ys games are totally awesome on the PSP).

I only wish I could have been more open to games when I was young but I was victim to the wallet of my parents back in the days of NES, SNES and Genesis.  I didn't really get into computer gaming until my middle school/high school years and even then I had very little knowledge of the whole world of gaming.   I think a big part of me wishes I grew up in Japan, and that maybe my whole outlook on turn-based RPGs would be different today.

Yes to the first, no to the second.

Very few retro games withstand the test of time.
