Regarding the reapers on the galaxy map, there's no need to worry about triggering them. It's a dumb bolted on thing you can mostly ignore. If you trigger them you just run away, come back and cheese it over to where you want to be, repeat. Not one of Bioware's best thought out gameplay mechanics for this game. No penalty if you get caught either other than having to reload.
Hang on! I remember why I never finished this game now. It was this mission. The part at the end glitched out. Enemy was stuck in geometry or despawned, 'students barrier' kept going down but there was no one to shoot and nothing for me to do about it. Soft-lock followed by mission fail. The glitch remained after I loaded in an earlier save. I was pissed off about that and never played the game again.
Hell yeah let's go! This is the only ME of the main trilogy I never finished. I abandoned it about half way, I can't remember exactly why. Some altered components of the design had been changed in ways that irritated me, I think.
lol I forgot all about the shoehorned in kid you're supposed to care about at the beginning.
