Best of 2009

A number of titles on my list are there solely because they pushed the envelope as a game in their specific genre. Before 2009, I wasn't a fan of many of the franchises or genres present on this list, but these titles got me hooked.

  • I had never enjoyed the Tony Hawk series of Skateboarding games; partially because it appealed to a demographic I was not affiliated with, and that it seemed like a cookie-cutter approach to sports games. I remember the SSX series, one of my fondest franchises that I enjoyed every title of, and reminisced on what made it good to me: killer tricks, true "holy shit" moments, and fun factor that is multiplied geometrically when one friend is in the mix. Skate 2 takes all of these aspects and puts it in a next-gen package that really caught my eye. I'll be honest when I say I didn't play Skate, but after seeing the Giantbomb quick look, it really opened my eyes to a genre not really explored by myself. I still fire the game up now and then to record some sick videos and every time it feels like an entirely new game. Skate 2 is a game where my wits were challenged, and one I needed to persist with in order to succeed. Not many games give you the freedom as Skate 2 did, and not many gave you that sink-or-swim vibe. This alone nets Skate 2 a spot on my Top 10 of 2009 list.
