Game of the Year 2016

List items

  • This is the first time I've 100%'d a Souls game. Partially because its a bit easier this time around but also because I couldn't stop playing. I don't think I find these games that difficult anymore but the challenge on some of the bosses is deeply satisfying.

  • For a very long time Harvest Moon has been a series residing firmly in the dumpster. A series that did so much right early on and continued to miss the point every iteration. While Story of Seasons came out recently it still doesn't come close to touching the quality of Stardew Valley. Stardew gets almost everything right and builds on a style of game that has almost never been reproduced. People point at Animal Crossing a lot but that has almost nothing in common. Its staggering that it took this long for someone to rip off Harvest Moon, and its even more surprising that they did it so much better than the original.

  • I cannot believe they made a Doom game in 2016 and it was one of the best games I've ever played. The movement, the soundtrack, the effects, the level design, it all works. They even made the "hallway > arena > hallway" formula work well. Its so fucking good.

  • It's more Civ. It looks amazing and the changes to formula are awesome. Wish the AI were better but you can just put that on the box of every Civ game.

  • Yeah yeah, it's more WoW. However, everyone who worked on this release should be given a hug and a high five. The treadmill is longer and more interesting than its ever been. It eats my time and is a horrible nightmare game, but this expansion is maybe the best they've ever done.

  • Its got a lot of rough corners but it's a huge celebration of past final fantasy games and just makes you feel good. If you loved those games you owe it to yourself to give this a go. Its by far not perfect but every time I finished playing it I couldn't stop thinking and talking about it.

  • Firewatch looks wonderful and is acted amazingly. The story falls short in the end but its amazing that we've come this far with game narrative that we can have a conversation more about the quality of the story than the way the game runs.

  • I love darkest dungeons. The art, the gameplay, the audio, its all amazing. However, I barely played it after the official release because its just too intense, but i still think about it and smile, and then hide.

  • Space Squids.

  • I Didn't expect to like this game, I didnt expect to put as much time as I did playing this game. I didn't expect to play a Vita game in 2016. While I haven't finished the last section of builders, I enjoy almost everything about it, minus the repetitive nature of the progression.
