Time to become a multi (this gen) console owner?

Ok here goes.......Im a current PS2 & PS3 owner and a  former owner of a SMS, SNES, PS1, N64 and a Dreamcast (Plus we have a Wii in our family livingroom).
So Im not a Sony fan boy I'm just a happy Sony customer for whom it was a natural  move over from the PS2 to a PS3.

But.....

This of course means I have missed out on everything exclusive to Microsoft / The Xbox :(
Now while I admired Microsoft for trying to for a better phrase "PC-ify consoles" with the original Xbox by including things like a built in hard drive, I dont think the original Xbox ever became the "console that played PC games" that I had envisioned it would become so I do not feel like I missed out on too much there.

But then !!! ....

Came the 360. Now when it came out I was still happy with my trusty old PS2. But over the course of the last five years or so I have been really  impressed with the 360 and how it has become a hardcore gaming machine rather than a PC in a  box.  Infact it's ironic that if anything my PS3 more closely resembles what I thought the original Xbox would become with it's " Does everything" attitude!

I also I think Microsoft was very smart to offer the Xbox in various specs (Arcade/Elite) as this made the console more accessible and also gave people the option of paying for what they actually wanted. Unlike Sony who made my buy a blueray player with my console! But I'm digressing here so to summarize the 360 has done well in sales down to both good marketing and a great  games line up.

But now !!! !!!

The price of a 360 has been reduced in the UK to £160 as it is nearing the end of it's lifecycle so I'm really tempted to see what I have missed as it is almost too cheap now not to buy one! so here is what I am thinking I will get :-

(1)  Xbox 360 Console 250GB (250GB Hard Drive)  £159.99
Im tempted to buy the Halo Reach limited edition silver console which looks great on it's own but is £100 more and wont blend in with my TV ect due to being silver.

(2) Gears of war 3 limited edition £59.99
The Octus servise medal and COG flag look cool as frack!

(3)  Halo Reach £24.99
I like Sci-fi schooters like Killzone and  the game is the start of the Halo story so is good point for me to begin I guess.

(4) Fable II and Halo 3 double pack. £19.99
Fable has always been a game I think I would enjoy playing and with this double pack I would also have Halo 3 to play once I had finished Reach.

(5) Bullet Witch £4.99 (preowned)
Looks fun, its cheap and........OK .... I like sexy Goth Witches!

(6) Forza 3 £12.99
Soild and pritty looking racer that's very cheap.

That's enough to be going on with I guess :)

Im happy to read any comments or recomendations on this too!

it sounds like a good idea to do that. i enjoy my xbox 360 and ps3. i got my xbox 360 first and then i got a ps3. i've always wanted a ps3 when it came out and once the price dropped i finally got it. i enjoyed forza 3 a lot. i think the ps3 is the console to go to, to play online games.

Bullet Witch isn't even worth the five pounds they're offering it at.

I was in your same situation like 5 months ago.  I had a 360 several years ago for a short period of time, and then used it as rent when I moved across country (another story for another day)

After having the PS3 since release, I finally bought a new 360 about 5 months ago, and am very happy I did!

-The first reason for me doing so was that there were some exclusives I wanted to try out (Alan Wake was on the top of my list)
-After spending time on both systems now, I have found that the control scheme on both consoles can lend themselves to particular types of games)  a.k.a. I like fighters on ps3, I like shooters on sexbox.
-Even the presentation of other software and media can be more appealing on one over the other.  I like Netflix on ps3 better, and appreciate the support of pandora, last fm on xbox.
-Finally, it allows me to get the better version of a multi release title on the appropriate console.  I could care less about Trophies/Achievements, so I got LA Noire on PS3 and Red Dead Redemption on Xbox

If you can afford it, you should have all three (PC, X360, PS3) to make sure you don't miss anything.

If not, one will do you just fine.

Actually I meant it breaks down to around 5 bucks a month. Pretty sure you can't subscribe for just a month. However, if you make a Silver account, then decline upgrading to Gold, you apparently get a free Gold trial.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of the  3 months  Gold subscription cards. Which would wee me over the winter! another plus would be that I would not have to enter credit card information either ;)

@crusader8463

: You do make some very valid points for me to consider, But at 25 quid I'm sure I would get value from Halo Reach even offline  (a new online ps3 game in the UK could be as much as £60) I also dont mind too much paying for an online service if I value it which is why I would try it out for a few months first.
I get more upset with paid DLC in games myself (now that is a rip off in my book).

@MideonNViscera: exactly, it was one of the reasons I bought a ps3 at launch, because of all the great exclusive sony franchises, god of war, gt  and I knew from ps2 that they would have shit ton of JRPGs.. but as time went on I saw JRPGs one after the other coming to 360 instead.
So weird.. but I have both now so I can play them all =D

@swfcfan: If you are just getting them for single player I'm not sure if it's worth it to be honest. Once you total all that you are looking at an easy $300-$400 price tag and all of those games have really short single player and are only really popular for their online parts.

Each their own and all that, but I personally despise the whole paying monthly to play games online because I tend to get very hot/cold on games and may play them for a few days and then never touch them again for weeks. So when I'm paying a fee for that I feel like I'm throwing away that money. Just saying my line of thinking on the whole thing, and why it doesn't appeal to me.

If you feel the same way about those things then that's how you will probably end up feeling about the system too, but if not then go with whatever you think is best. That's just my two cents on the system.

I say go for it. The new consoles are so nice. I have all three and use my 360 the most. ~90 360 games, 7 PS3 and about 10 Wii.

Yes, I use my Wii more than my PS3.

EDIT: On a humorous note, I tried to renew my XBL subscription with a cancelled credit card and it went through so I have XBL for free until next March haha

I own both consoles and I gotta say they are both amazing and definitely worth a buy. The ps3 has the better exclusives where the 360 just has a way better online social set up. If you have the money go for it. You'll have to pay a few bucks per month to play the 360 online but it's not very much to ask for if you love online gaming.

Yeah I enjoy playing a good FPS after a hard day at work, and I now find using a controller more natural than a mouse and keyboard.
I would be happy to just play the single player missions too as I have enough games I can play online using my PS3 now psn is back up at last! but as MideonNViscera said I could just buy a monthly subcription to Xbox live to check it out.

So true, but so damn weird. I mean Playstation was always the place for RPGs.

I was exactly the same, went from ps2 to ps3, having never owned an xbox console missed out on a bunch of games.
Got an xbox360 like 2months ago and I do not regret it.
Alan wake is incredible and that game alone is worth the purchase imo.
Add Gears of war and you got a pretty good reason to buy the console.
I bought Halo:Reach but didnt like it, ended up trading it in before finishing it, I preferred Gears of Wars 2 way more, cant wait for the 3rd one!
Other than that, if you like JRPGs 360 is the console to have, they have many JRPGS that came a long time ago that are super cheap now and pretty great for fans of the genre.
The best thing about having both though, is that now you wont have to worry about "is this 360 exclusive"? you  can be excited about ANY game on consoles, without worrying about if it's coming to ps3 or not, especially with all the exclusives XBLA has.

I say: Go for it!

It's like 5 bucks a month and doesn't go down for a month at a time.
I'd say get one cause they're cheap. You probably have friends with X-Boxes that you can't play games with right now. There's also the exclusive games, some of which are obvious, and others which are overlooked, such as Lost Odyssey. Good old school JRPG. I don't even know for sure which games are exclusive. I'm always telling my friend to buy a game only to get the response that it's X-Box exclusive haha  Happens less now.

Anyway, it's not like buying a house or something. If you think you'll get some amusement out of it, it's kind of a no-brainer isn't it? If money's tight enough that you need to carefully consider it, I'd say don't bother.

Since the only exclusives the 360 really has are multiplayer shooters it has not appealed to me personally at all. I just see the phrase 360 exclusives to be an oxymoron since I hate playing shooters with controllers and find the idea of needing to pay a monthly fee just for the privilege of playing the games you already bought online to be insulting.

If you have the money and you're actually going to play all these games, then go ahead. I own a PS3 and 360, so I don't miss out on exclusives. Plus, Netflix streams better on PS3 than it does with Xbox.
