My recording roots.

Throughout my life's journey I've often asked myself what should come next. Where should I go, what should I do, and around the time I was 19 I had just quit my job as a produce clerk at a local supermarket and was pretty broke. I decided to go into a field that I had always loved, music. I've been a guitarist/singer for a local band for years at this point, and our recordings always sounded like trash even when in the hands of "professional" engineers. So I decided to go to trade school in New York City - Institute of Audio Research to be exact. The school wasn't terrible, the professors were real industry professionals and I learned a great deal of recording and editing music using Protools, professional microphones, and an amazing recording environment. I graduated after nine months with a 3.94 GPA and couldn't wait to get started. So using what little cash I had left, I purchased an M-Audio Firewire box (I think it was the 18/14) and used some pre amps that I wired in school. I have since put years of work into transforming my basement into a somewhat professional environment. Thousands of dollars saved from crappy jobs just to build this studio. Though the audio career path never fully worked out for me and I am now in college studying English, I don't regret the time and effort I put into the art of recording. As an aspiring journalist, I feel that my recording background may give me a little leverage in my future. Who knows? Now the studio is used to record videos for my youtube channel, podcasts, and the occasional high school "rock" band or "rapper."

Pictured below is how my studio looked in 2009. I now have a 2011 Macbook Pro, a Daking Mic IV Pre Amp, a Hauppauge HDPVR, and a 22inch Samsung TV on that desk. I should really take a new picture.

@PilotXIan: I really wish I had better equipment and bands that acted more professional to record. Listening to these again makes me sad haha. My friends and I have been trying to record our old songs with all my new equipment, we only have the drums recorded for about seven songs. We can only record during the summers, so it's been a very slow process. I am hoping that will come out decently since the guys have pretty good equipment and they are pretty good musicians.

@PilotXIan: See the one thing about my studio is I could never afford amps, outboard compressors, eqs, processors, a decent drum kit. So really its my room, my mics, and my pre amps. The bands bring in their drum kits and guitar amps and they usually end up brining in 15 watt amps and a crappy starter kit drum set. So I never actually got a recording I was actually proud of. Closest thing is the recordings of my band. So I will give you links to my bands old myspace and my recording studios myspace, just keep all of what I said in mind haha. Also, if they suck at playing their songs I try my best to fix the tracks, but there's only so much I can do.

@IkariNoTekken: I love Daking, but they are so damn expensive! My 4 input pre amp was $2500...

It's never too late to change your path and your aims and ambitions, and don't feel as though your time has been wasted as you've most likely learnt a lot from that experience. Your story sums up that sentiment perfectly.

Nice audio set up you've got as well; friend of mine has a quite a lot of Daking equipment.

I like it! I studied at the Acadamy of Contemporary Music here in the UK and graduated with a BA Honours degree in Music production! I too have spent the years post my graduation spending my time and money to invest in building a studio at home and have really enjoyed it! It's be a gradual process but I'm finally getting the kind of results I've always wanted from my little project studio! Do you have anywhere online that we could listen to examples of your work dude?

Thanks! It took so long to get it like that, you should see how it looked when I graduated. I had a gutted PC on a desk that was arms length and blankets on the walls. It sounded terrible. The acoustic treatment I have up now is really good, I sometimes wonder why they never properly treated the walls of the Whiskey Media podcast room. It would kill all the unwanted background noise.
