TeddyB's Game of the Year 2019

It's been an okay year for gaming, maybe we're spoiled since last year was so great? However, I've managed to create a top 10 that I think fits for me this year. None of these games were the best I've ever played, but they were not bad games throughout. There are some spoilers, you've been warned.

Honorable mentions

Tom Clancy's The Division 2

A shout-out to the game and its developers for actually learning from its past mistakes and actually having any kind of endgame content in it.

Astral Chain

A really great game that at times got pretty boring with its extremely monotonous side quests.

Tetris 99

Fast paced and great fun. Really difficult.

Borderlands 3

More of the same fun "rootin'-tootin' lootin'-shootin'" that made me fall in love with Borderlands 2, although the jokes were mostly really bad. I can't really figure out if I've gotten old or the jokes just don't work anymore.

Control

Great game and mostly playable on the PS4 (standard version), it gets an 7 out of 10 in mind fuckery and it felt creepy almost all the way through. Chapter/mission 9 was the most frustrating one where I had to cheese my way through it, which isn't really a good sign. But, the mission before that was probably hands down the coolest shit in gaming this year.

Outer Wilds

This might be an weird honorable mention as I haven't played this game for longer than 1.5 hours, but the music is fantastic and the game feels very interesting. Looking forward to finish this one.

Afterparty

Haven't really delved any deeper into this one either. But for the time played, I liked the jokes and the game feels really promising. Looking forward to rolling credits on this one too.

  • I really can't give anybody an convincing answer as to why you should play this game. But it clicked for me with what we in Sweden call "autumn depression", which I usually get starting September. Foremost, the music is fucking amazing. The setting with the rain and gray/green environments felt just right. The game play felt mostly great, except for driving vehicles. The story was very Hideo/anime, but if you can accept that, then you'll probably won't have any bigger problems with it. Although they could've changed the voice actress for the Chiral Artist as it felt like the Japanese voice actress/model didn't really understand what the hell she was saying.

    P.S.

Why the fuck was Norman Reedus nominated for "Best performance"? He barely talks and the one time he smiles he looks ridiculous. Why didn't they choose any of the female actors instead? Take Margaret Qualley (Mama/Lockne) or any of the other actresses.

  • This game is my Dead Cells of 2018, although not as challenging. The music, the fact that you progress through the story even though you might not progress in the dungeons, it's all great. Good variety in playable characters and the game doesn't really demand too much from you as a player to be able to unlock them. I really need to roll credits on this one!

  • Tight gameplay and graphics. It might be one of the best stories in a fighting game, only really competing with the Injustice series (both developed by Netherrealm). The only negative things I have to say about this game is the Krypt and Ronda Rousey.

  • I have never played any of the Castlevania games, the closest I ever came to one as a kid was some stupid Bram Stoker's Dracula for the SNES, which wasn't even a Metroidvania type of game, at all.

This game feels and plays great. A bit difficult in the beginning but as I progressed further I felt that I got somewhat OP.

  • HYPE! Dante and Nero are back! Great game play, ridiculous fighting and weapons. This game is a wet dream for 13 year old me. The story is pretty lame and predictable (mostly), but I guess these games aren't really played for the sake of the story. ;)

  • This was a fun little game. I played this one solo and it worked really well. Would've liked to play it in co-op but my SO was out of the country for the week that I started playing this. Really creative level design of all the different floors that felt fresh from start to finish. Some parts of the game that made you go back to old floors got frustrating really fast, god damn that asshole of a cat.

  • This game is simply put: Great. It is so simple yet so complex. I never finished this one, as it will be my go to game every now and then when no new games are being released for a couple of days. I don't even believe I ever will finish this one, but it will remain downloaded on my Switch.

  • Played this one mostly with friends through network play. I really liked that you could pause a game and return to it another time, which is really something I think all turn-based games strive for to have these days. Mostly, I believe, because its kind of difficult to sync 3-4 people and have the time to sit through an 3-6 hour campaign.

  • I think I played through all the story missions and a couple of the player created levels. I love this whole idea as a game, and I think it's really cool of Nintendo to have this type of creation game.

I tried creating one level myself, but I do not have the creativity in me to make anything cool or fun. I just made one to fuck with some of my friends, they all hated it. :)

  • I haven't played a Fire Emblem game since Awakening on my 3DS, but I loved the time I spent with this game, and it felt fresh with the addition of the school and all the school-related mechanics. This one almost feels like two games in one. If I got right, there are four endings to this one(?), which I never would've had the motivation to see through, but I think the developers did a solid game. I was half-way through my first play through when I stopped playing this, the reason being other games that were getting released. But I honestly plan to return to this one as soon as I get the chance.
