What'cha Been Doing? Pt. 3: I really like Brutal Legend

 This week!
Halo ODST
South Park
DJ Hero
A little NBA Live
Brutal Legend
and a lot of TV!

Halo 3: ODST

I've never been a big fan of the Halo series (besides the first two) so take that to heart when reading my thoughts on ODST. The story is weak, the enemies are just plain bullet sponges, and the lighting is just annoying. They make it to where you pretty much have to use your light vision all the time, because if you take it off, your eyes are so adjusted to the light that it looks very dark when, in actuality, it's a normal color. Scattered through the game is some audio logs but needless to say, I didn't get that far as the rest of the story looked to be the same old bullshit that turned me off the last Halo games. The one special thing that I do enjoy is Firefight. When you're playing with friends, battling through hordes of enemies, using Halo's good combat, it's just plain fun. Also, griefing. Halo 3: ODST delivers on what it should be, sheer fan service for people that love Halo. But if you're on the fence about it like I was, at least to give it a rent to try out Firefight.

South Park: Let's Go Tower Defense Play!

Speaking of fan service, South Park Lets Go Titty Tat was released a couple of weeks ago. I've been a fan of South Park for awhile and still enjoy it quite a bit but I know how terrible South Park games can be, so going into this I was obviously skeptical and luckily I was surprised. The look is very much South Park, you get all that blood splattin' goodness, comedy, and all that nice stuff. The main thing that is actually wrong with the game is the gameplay, it achieves the Tower Defense feel by being intense but the lack of a grid and the fact that if too many people break through your barriers, you're screwed, adds a lot of frustration. Which was actually was a real shocker for me, dude, this game is hard! I can't even get pass the first four levels! Them damn old people. Final thought on South Park: LGTDP would be a buy for South Park fans and maybe a trial game for others.

I also got NBA Live 10 but I won't talk about that (ask questions in the comments if you really want to hear more in depth thoughts on it) just know it's actually really good.

DJ Hero

So yea, I took advantage of the 1 day offer of DJ Hero at Gamestop and played it last Sunday. When I first went into DJ Hero, I put on some Purell and started the tutorial.

The tutorial was really good but it seems like it didn't tell me enough, then again I did stop at the point where you have to get 10000 points, the reason I stopped was because it was the "FINAL EXAM" so if it explained more after that, not really my fault. The set list was weird but in a good way and mixing the tracks with the crossfader is very slick and fun. Scratching feels just right while still providing a nice amount of challenge. My main fault was when you miss a note, your song kind of falls off track and when that happens, although it was probably supposed to happen like this, it completely messed me up and made the songs sound terrible. This is fine and dandy but when I'm new to the game, it's not encouraging to have my music be trashed on. All in all though, I really enjoyed the demo. The tutorial was OK, the controller feels great, and the tracklist looks nice. Stoked to get the game for Christmas.

...and now the whopping main event. Brutal Legend.

Brutal Legend has summoned tons of hype, being a Tim Schafer game, having Jack Black in it, and it also being very ambitious with it's "metal" premise. It achieves those goals and more. This game is so packed full of fun and great content that paying 60 bucks for it felt like a steal. The first thing you notice is the comedy and, specifically because it's a Tim Schafer game, this game is damn funny. Actually it isn't just the writing that makes for great comedy, it's the animations. Brutal Legend features many 'blink-and-you-miss-it' moments. Be it a character making a funny face or someone standing in astonishment. It's all comedic gold.

Brutal Legends "battle feature" is both exciting while being very challenging. It combines the brutal (no pun intended) combat with some fantastic RTS feature. Eddie dawns wings to give him a nice over-head view of the big battlefield. The object is simple, just take over merch booths, summon your own with the power of rock, and fight! There is other aspects like using fans to get more soldiers, heal people, etc. That all sounds kind of simple but having to recruit your people to your position, set their attack areas, choose your soldiers, and finally activate it, adds difficulty while not being overtly annoying.

Seeing as my "what'cha been doing" rules is one paragraph per game, I should wrap this game up now.The story is fantastic, and takes some unexpected turns. The only real complaints I have is frequent dying during battles sometimes is a bad nuisance, and some (very few) jokes do fall flat. Some people may think that if they're not a metal fan, they won't enjoy this, well I'm not a fan of metal and, as you can see, I love this game. Buy, buy, buy

Because of some Gamefly shipping woes, I more than likely won't be talking about either Saw or Uncharted.
