My Top Ten Games of 2017

List of the games I play through in 2017 and my thoughts on them as I go.

List items

  • What a breath of fresh air to such a key series. Breath of the Wild in many ways sets the standard for open world games going forward, and I cannot imagine the Zelda series going back to what it was before this game. Masterpiece

  • Ingenious level design, full of colour and fun, Odyssey is an example of Nintendo at its best. The variety of the levels and the simple but massively rewarding structure of the game is easy to grasp and a delight to play. Wonderful game.

  • Return to form for a venerable series. Atmosphere is rustic and reminds me of the best of True Detective, with outstanding flow and pacing throughout the game. The bloat and baysplosions are gone, the evil in a residential setting is back!

  • I haven't enjoyed Assassin's Creed in years prior to this. Since the conclusion of the Ezio storyline it has been off the rails, with the exception of Black Flag. Then Origins changed this. While the gameplay is absolutely an attempt to copy The Witcher 3, the world and the feel of the game is so immersive. It helps that I am a lover of Egyptian history but they absolutely nailed this setting and while the combat has issues I felt the core spirit of the game overcomes this. A joy to play.

  • The open world is visually gorgeous but feels lacking compared to the likes of AC: Origins and Breath of the Wild, but where Horizon excels is in the design and animation of the machine enemies and the main story which is impactful and feels like one of the best in recent gaming. Very solid start to what I hope is a series of games.

  • I loved this trilogy in the PS1 days and it is great to see them receive a meaningful remaster. The platforming has certainly aged but they are still a blast to play and the difficulty curve on certain levels is challenging in the extreme. Unforgiving but fun game, and great value.
